Suspected blackmail gang operating on Grindr uncovered in BBC investigation | BBC News
Police failed to properly investigate allegations that a gang was blackmailing men on the gay dating app Grindr, the BBC can reveal.
Our investigation has learned of five cases of suspected blackmail using Grindr in one area, with at least four of them connected to the same gang, which remains at large.
In one instance, a suspected victim killed himself 24 hours after a group of men turned up at his home demanding he hand over his new Range Rover.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) watchdog has told Hertfordshire Police – the investigating force – to examine whether “homophobic assumptions” could have contributed to failures in the investigation.
Hertfordshire Police said it was “unable to discuss specific points” about the case, which has now been reopened, but said it is committed to “building and maintaining good working relationships with the LGBTQ+ communities”.
Warning – this story contains distressing content and references to suicide.

Man who learnt to read at 18 becomes Cambridge University’s youngest ever black professor – BBC News
A man who could not read or write until he was 18 is to become the youngest ever black person to become a professor at Cambridge.
Jason Arday, from south-west London, was diagnosed with autism and global development delay in his early years, and unable to speak until he was 11 years old.
Now the 37-year-old is set to become professor of sociology of education at the university.
Official figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency show how, in 2021, just 155 of more than 23,000 university professors in the UK were black.
Prof Arday said he has a particular interest in improving the representation of ethnic minorities in higher education.
“If we want to make education more inclusive, the best tools we have are solidarity, understanding and love,” he said.
