⚖️P4P🥇 Pernell Whitaker vs Oscar De La Hoya | FULL FIGHT | WBC Welterweight Title | 12/4/1997

Published

on

Pernell Whitaker vs. Oscar De La Hoya, billed as Pound for Pound, was a professional boxing match contested on April 12, 1997 for the WBC welterweight championship.

The bout featured a matchup of two of the top ranked pound-for-pound fighters in boxing. 33-year-old Pernell Whitaker had been the WBC welterweight champion for four years, captured world titles in four different divisions and had been among the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport since 1989, with The Ring magazine listing him number one in their annual pound-for-pound rankings for three consecutive years from 1993 to 1995.

He was also recognized as the lineal welterweight champion. The 24–year old Oscar De La Hoya was a perfect 23–0, had already become a three-division world champion and was reigning WBC super lightweight champion, which he had won the previous year after defeating Mexican legend Julio César Chávez. At the time of their fight, De La Hoya and Whitaker were the number two and three ranked pound-for-pound fighters, with only the then-WBC light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. ahead of them.

Plans for the mega-fight had been discussed since De La Hoya’s victory over Chávez. The bout was all but set in early 1997, though both De La Hoya and Whitaker would first have to get past their mandatory challengers. De La Hoya would make the first, and only, defense of his super lightweight title against the undefeated Miguel Ángel González, while Whitaker would meet Diosbelys Hurtado, who was also unbeaten, in a welterweight title match the following wee.

De La Hoya would have little trouble with Gonzalez, scoring a lopsided unanimous decision victory and putting the pressure squarely on Whitaker. Whitaker, however, would have difficulty with Hurtado. Hurtado scored two knockdowns and was ahead on all three official scorecards when Whitaker rallied in the 11th round, scoring 10 unanswered left hooks to Hurtado’s head before the referee stopped the fight and awarded Whitaker the technical knockout victory, officially putting the Whitaker–De La Hoya match on.

Champion Whitaker was 3 to 1 underdog.

🥊FULL FIGHT‼️ Pacquiao vs Thurman | WBA Welterweight Title | July 20, 2019 | PBC on FOX PPV

Published

on

Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman, billed as Welterweight Supremacy, was a boxing match for the WBA (Super) welterweight championship. The event took place on July 20, 2019 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The bout sold 500,000 pay-per-view (PPV) buys in the United States, earning an estimated $37.5 million in pay-per-view revenue.

After Thurman’s fight with Josesito López, he publicly said he wanted to fight Pacquiao next. It was initially thought that Errol Spence Jr. would be next on Pacquiao’s list when he came up the ring after Spence easily disposed of Mikey Garcia. It had also been rumored that Pacquiao would be facing Thurman next and Spence would instead have a unification bout with Shawn Porter. On May 11, 2019 it was announced that Pacquiao–Thurman would happen on July 20, 2019 and a few days after, MGM Grand Garden Arena announced that they would be hosting the fight.

Betting odds started in favor of Thurman but slowly went Pacquiao’s way as the fight drew closer. Throughout the promotion, Thurman had nice things to say about Pacquiao being a legend as a sign of respect and would follow it up with how he planned on finishing Pacquiao’s career.

Manny Pacquiao vs Jessie Vargas | FULL FIGHT | WBO Welterweight Title | 5/11/2016 | Top Rank HD

Published

on

Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas, billed as The Legend/The Champ, was a boxing match contested on November 5, 2016, for the WBO and Lineal welterweight championship. The event took place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On August 3, Pacquiao’s business manager confirmed that WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27–1, 10 KO) would be the next opponent for Pacquiao on November 5, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pacquiao made the confirmation after a two-hour meeting with Top Rank’s Bob Arum and Canadian adviser Michael Koncz held in Manila on August 7, that he agreed to fight Vargas. “Yes, the fight is on. I have agreed to a Nov. 5 fight with reigning WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas. Boxing is my passion. I miss what I’d been doing inside the gym and atop the ring. My entire training camp will be held here in the Philippines so I can attend to my legislative works. This is my campaign promise and I’m determined to keep it,” Pacquiao said in a statement. He also explained that he has to fight again to earn a living: “Boxing is my main source of income. I can’t rely on my salary as public official. I’m helping the family of my wife and my own family, as well. Many people also come to me to ask for help and I just couldn’t ignore them.”

In a press conference on September 8 held in Los Angeles, California, it was announced by Bob Arum that the fight would be self-distributed by Top Rank PPV. He also revealed that his company would continue to produce and distribute future pay-per-view events without the involvement of HBO.

As for the commentating panel, Arum stressed that he planned on putting a star-studded announcing team together, which would rival the work of HBO’s Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman. Arum confided that he was in talks with major boxing analysts, but he declined to name one as he had not worked out any official deals yet. “I think the commentating team is going to blow everybody’s socks off,” he vowed. According to Arum, Top Rank’s initial plans had received a good feedback from its partners and television companies, which gave him a hindsight that they could pull it off. “They’re all very, very receptive to getting this kind of programming. But right now, this looks like the most likely scenario,” Arum stated.

Pacquiao was guaranteed $4 million plus a percentage of the revenue of the fight while Vargas was guaranteed $2.5 million.[10]
