Covid Inquiry: What Really Happened Inside Downing Street? | BBC Newscast
Today, the former deputy cabinet secretary, Helen Macnamara, speaks to Newscast about the findings of the recent module of the covid inquiry which found that the UK did “too little, too late”.
Helen had a front seat for those momentous decisions that shaped the direction of the country during the pandemic, and has previously told the inquiry herself that a “toxic” environment affected decision-making during the crisis.
She gives her reflections on life inside Downing Street at the time, the inquiry’s findings, and how much has changed 5 years on.

Today, Andy Burnham’s Labour leadership bid has been backed by 322 Labour MPs.
If no one else enters the contest, as expected, Burnham will be declared Labour leader next week before taking office as prime minister on 20 July. Burnham is currently just one short of securing 323 nominations, which is when it is mathematically impossible for a rival to reach the 81-MP threshold needed to run against him. Adam and Chris discuss.
An interim review of Personal Independence Payments (Pip) in England and Wales had found it to be “not fit for purpose”. Last year, the UK government asked Sir Stephen Timms to review whether Pip was “fair and fit for the future”. His initial report is being published on Thursday ahead of the final recommendations due in the autumn.Adam and Alex discuss with Ben Chu Policy and Analysis Correspondent, BBC Verify.

Prince Harry has completed a five-day trip to the UK, to get ready for the Invictus Games and to attend charity events.
The engagements started on Tuesday in London before moving on to Birmingham.
But as always, much of the focus was on family tensions and whether there are any signs of bridges being built between the returning Sussexes and their royal relations.
