Does the law need to change to better protect cyclists? BBC News
Every year around 115 cyclists die in accidents on our roads across the UK. Of those that involve a car – only about 50% lead to a driver being charged with an offence. The way cycling deaths are treated by police and prosecutors may need to change, the former Director of Public Prosecutions has said. We asked Anna Tatton-Brown, a BBC journalist who works for this programme, to take a look. Her dad died after he was knocked off his bike in Central London last year. The film contains some distressing images.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

New explosions near Iranian port cities, says state media | BBC News
Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

I think cyclists are often overlooked and ignored in traffic in the uk. As a dutch person live in the uk temporarily and I have encountered cereal dangerous situation already. More so in two months in the UK than two years in the Netherlands. It is true that some of these cyclists behave dangerously but the roads and the behaviour of the car drivers makes it makes often dangerous for cyclists than for car drivers. Cyclists are vulnerable on roads and I think that car drivers should general have more respect for them. Here is a list of dangerous situations I encountered in the last two months:
– car drivers (multiple) opening their door right in front of me. And non of them looked apologetic. The looked at me like: What do you want?
-I was passed in a curve and almost pushed off the road
– a car hooting at me because the driver had to wait a few seconds before he could pass me since the rode was too narrow to pass me at that pont
– a car hooting at me because she had to stop for me since I had right of way.
– a car pulling out right in front of me. I was just able to brake.
– an oncoming car stopping right in front of me on my side of the road. I got in discussion with him and explained that I had a lot of trouble with the behaviour of car driver so far and that I did not appreciate that he stopped right in front of me. He said that I was at least as much at fault as him because I stopped right in front of him (on my side of the road) and he indicated. He said I could have passed around him easily since I was able to brake. (what kind of argument is that?). At one point he stood right in front of me and yelling. I was really scared. This kind of thinks make living in the uk less pleasant. I think english and Scottish people should respect cyclists more, because many of them don't do that right now.
I think that most situation would not have happens if I was driving a car so I feel often mistreated on the British roads.
But the weird thing is that everybody that is not in a car is super relaxed (except when they are tipsy/drunk) and always super friendly (also when they are tipsy/drunk).(sorry for the English mistakes, if there are any please correct me)

Cyclists needs to fuck off, they don’t pay a penny to use the road where as I have to spend thousands for insurance, tax and getting the vehicle tested, why shouldn’t cyclists be the same but cheaper? They should be insured just incase of an accident, tax for using the road and the bicycle should be tested yearly to make sure it’s road worthy. They take over the road and always assume they’re in the right, they need to fuck off and get off the road

In The Netherlands when a car/truck etc. collides with a cyclist (or pedestrian), the driver of the car/truck is automatically at least 50% at fault. The law functions in this way because cyclists and pedestrians are 'weaker' traffic participants and other drivers should always be aware that there could be a cyclist on the road, or a pedestrian crossing.
This makes sure that car and truckdrivers act more careful on the roads.

As they're not having a thread on their 2017 report. I'm putting mine here in response.I feel the road is the most dangerous place. If you value your life cycle where it's safe surely? yes illegally? or is it, does anybody know the actual legal document, not the interpretation of the legal documents. The law doesn't require that you deliberate endanger yourself to obey with the law, is a law I know exists. Where I live people who assume the law is as simplistic as cycling safely on pavements is illegal ( any proof of this law? show me some actual legal documents written in legal languages?) anyway surely the law that delibrately endangering yourself to obey laws is not the laws intentions. Is this a superior law to the cycling law documents? As you know what people say is the law in low english and what legal documents say can often be a mistake of education and interpretation error. It is a known issue that police have hardship quoting the actual legal documents written in the lords word for word in old english. The law is never what people say is the law in low english at all, it's written down, theres records of what it really says. If some people are feeling cocky by now. Please visit often the rows of flowers where people tried to obey the law and died to try to obey it. That would be alive today if they made certain their safety came first. I would have interpretted the laws intention applicable to trouble makers, not decent people trying to stay safe behaving perfectly sensible. surely most laws, are intended for application ultimately to trouble makers really. There are superseding documents overruling what the entire point of laws are that superseded any lesser laws. Surely it is not the law that the law fails to serve the point in laws? who has the superceeding laws that describe what the point in laws are? ( if you asked a policeman he'd nearly certainly arrest you as being cheeky if you asked this, lately they seem to dislike questions some days, despite it's in their work contract that among their duties is being helpful to members of the public with simple questions, many will try to attack you just to ask things like excuse me can you tell me the time, or for directions, beating up people due to overwhelming compulsion isn't the only new trend police are forming in daily mail accounts, they're also throwing their contracts out the window entirely, I wonder if they receive any contract at all anymore, youtube is full of them acting like mafia henchman asking for people to show them respect, seemingly without any legal warrants) my view is the intention of law is to combat trouble makers not to be used just to make a mess of perfectly working society, because the law if you interpret it your own way, can be used that way. surely* Also I wrote this 2017 after your program about insisting path cycling is a crime… can you prove this? surely this is just what policeman normally say… it's not excactly legal language?… I think you delibrately ignored the law that states it's not the law to put yourself in danger to obey the law, nobody mentioned this superceeding law… people who trust policemans versions of laws instead of lords versions will probably more deaths, do you care, of course not. it's modern times. arrogant uneducated illogical, angry and opinionated and irresponsible, all suffering from depression or stress, so always angry and stupid. this modern world is like children make it up as they go along, nobody has manners, people who think they have manners seem to have a childs version of manners like a sick joke. You also forgot to mention the car drivers who think it's the funniest thing ever to make cyclists crash by delibrately driving at them. In suburbs alot of gypsy cultures drive early in the morning and late at night, and if a cyclist is on the road, they nearly always try to drive too close finding it the funniest thing to make you crash in ditches. I stopped the idea of letting them knock me into ditches and if pavements are clearly unpopulated, I find it hard to interpret cycling on empty pavements as really a crime, unless I think we need to look at who needs to be laid off from the police force as probably a danger to themselves and others. In my world the law is about making a fluid society, not being an excuse to break down society. No. another thing not mentioned is deliberate booby traps in cycle lanes,.. just me?, ive witnessed it hundreds of times, bags of glass left in cycle lanes, not just a broken bottle, a whole bag, seen them do it, all over the country, apparently it makes them laugh also bike lock up areas are frequently unpoliced, so far around 5 top of the range bikes have been smashed in, because the cycle locks are just out the cctv recording? why? does anyone appreciate how unfun it might be to lug a 20kg broken bike 6 miles home on your shoulder dressed still in work clothes after working all day, pretty s*** ending to a hard working day, nobody cares… maybe we should just start shooting people who dont toe the line… these modern people demonstrate no conditions of deserving any rights not even to live, constantly daily. Only behave like parasites no use to themselves and very dangerous to let stay alive. All good reasons to just shoot them right in the head. No reasons ever not to. Apart from that it'd be illegal. But no other redeeming features at all other than that. Everything putrid and disgusting. I dream of a civilized future where people like that are easily taken away and shot as traitors. Easily. Restore patriotism and reasons to be patriotic. ( yes i used language designed to appeal probably to young people maybe, it makes me feel young. to act stupid to some extent. i find their language makes me constantly laugh nearly all day most days. plus ive been accused of getting serious when i read mature statements and respond maturely, too serious, too serious can be very dangerous by mistake often, so cutesy is how i deal with that issue, sorry )

I rode a bike in many countries in europe. England is by far the worst for riding a bike. I don't know about the laws, but the reality is you have no rights. Car drivers just see you as annoyance. And this is the good case. The bad case is they do not see you at all.
It no fun at all, it is dangerous. I would never ever again plan a bike trip in England.

Times are changing. The car lobby has pushed to make driving seem the absolute norm. I read a comment that said roads were made for cars. Come on. Have you really been that brainwashed? Trodden tracks were established for walkers, horse and cart and then cyclists campaigned for level roads with suitable surfaces. When cars were invented barged their way in.
Only motorways are built for the motor vehicle. The clue is in the name.

Very good piece. It shocked me to hear that only 50% of cyclist dying lead to a driver being charged. What a good idea about this proposed changed. The driver of a two tonne mass of metal, if they run over a cyclist and kill them, should have to prove they were not at fault with the case instantly hoisted to the CPS. Likewise the rider of a bicycle, if they run over a pedestrian and kill them, should have to prove they were not at fault with the case instantly hoisted to the CPS.

Make cyclists pass their "Cycling Proficiency Test", get insured and pay a contribution towards the cycle routes that motorists pay for then. I live in Cornwall UK and I've seen more incidents with cyclists causing issues than cars. Two abreast on a single lane road out in the sticks for example, you have the option of squeezing past them putting them and oncoming traffic in danger or dawdling along at 10mph stuck behind while they chat! I won't even get started on their attitude if you give them a little beep to move into single file…
@jbg48
January 21, 2024 at 10:10 am
This is utter bollocks. Bicycles have no business sharing roads with cars, buses and lorries in the massive numbers they now do. These people are looking to blame anyone when it was an accident waiting to happen just as the vast majority of cycling accidents are. The carnage will continue until proper measures are taken by all concerned and by government in particular to respond to the huge rise in cyclists.
This ridiculous notion that the driver must always be at fault is result of grieving families desperate for the blood of others. I've been cyclist in London, a motorcyclist and a motorist. I quit cycling years ago as it was, and remains far TOO DANGEROUS. I never had an accident on my motorcycle in ten years riding as I was properly trained to ride defensively and that ANY accident would ultimately be my fault. Cyclists have no such training or attitude and the VAST majority are hopelessly incompetent, or flat-out dangerous.
And far from what this woman is saying, it is perfectly reasonable to suspect a cyclist might be responsible for their own demise and it's no fluke most deaths are women. As a motorist I have been hit three times by cyclists, in every occasion due to their recklessness and damage was done to my vehicles on each occasion for I had to pay.

It's been a major issue here in Japan, too. Cyclists are not protected from cars or motorcycles on the roads at all, and it causes terrible, fatal accidents consistently. I love to ride on bicycle, but I always feel fear when I run on the roads because of insufficient bicycle lane. If the government encourage to ride on bicycle for health and economy, they need to prepare the sufficient and qualified bicycle-dedicated lanes.

January 21, 2024 at 10:10 am
Urmmm use your common sense and don't cycle in an area as congested as central London …hell driving there can be dangerous enough. If you're cycling there what do you expect??
Cyclists are an absolute nuisance on the roads for car drivers and pedestrians alike. In towns and areas where there are designated cycle routes they function fantasticly well, cyclists are away from traffic and pedestrians. But in towns and cities where its not possible to have designated cycle lanes then cyclists should use their common sense and expect to face some danger.
The answer isn't more laws to protect them ….they just shouldn't cycle in Central London. The fact that only half of motorists are convicted in accidents involving cyclists probably means the cyclists are also at fault and perhaps they should be more regulated in how they cycle on the roads.

I don't think cyclists should have the right of being on the road, they don't pay road TAX and cannot keep to the speed limit to which another car would be pulled over for going at the speed a cyclist would. They should propose a better idea in which cyclists should have there own pathway and if not, to stay on the pavement, the injury of a cyclist hitting a person walking is great and can be painful, but not deadly, cyclist on the road though with cars, the chances of injury and death are much greater.
@MikeDBloke

Im a cyclist and where as there is a lot of stupid drivers that dont look, dont signal when turning, park on cycle lanes or pull in front of us, (happened today when on a round about, she wanted to use the first exit but rather than be in the left hand lane she was in the right one and drove right in front of me just before I started to move, again NO INDICATORS!!)
There is also a lot of bad cyclists, riding at night with either no lights or ones that look like a mouse has lit a fart or with no hi-vis, cyclists that take stupid risks like not slowing down on a blind corner, going thorough red lights not to mention those that pay more attention to there phone than what's going on around them
Also some cycle paths need a clean and some holes being filled in
Same applies to pedestrians (Walkers), we cant stop suddenly and not to mention stepping into a cycle lane without looking also walking on them
