Meta to pay up to $18bn to settle claims its platforms harm children | BBC News
Social media giant Meta has agreed to a $18bn (£13.3bn) settlement with US states and territories to resolve claims that Facebook and Instagram harmed children.
A California judge approved the settlement, which Meta must pay to 48 states, plus the District of Columbia and three US territories, marking the company’s largest payment over child safety litigation to date.
Meta will also implement a host of changes aimed at better protecting kids online, which the states had demanded, including default daily time limits and night-time blocks.
Meta has denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement and said on Wednesday that the payment it agreed to “will be distributed in annual instalments over a 10-year period”.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Pride in the UK, and it all started in the basement of a London university.
The Gay Liberation Front was making itself heard in protests across the capital throughout the early 70s when gay people were being arrested and same sex attraction was still considered to be a mental illness.
But by July 1972, Pride was born with 150 people taking part and a revolution was under way.

The world’s changed a lot since Seán McLoughlin, better known to 31 million subscribers as Jacksepticeye, began making YouTube videos.
He started uploading content in 2012, in what many people consider to be the platform’s “golden age” when vlogging, video game playthroughs and comedy escapism were all the rage.
Like many in the content creation space, he’s been branching out in recent years, taking more acting jobs and getting involved in film production.
BBC Newsbeat’s Andrew Rogers caught up with McLoughlin to talk about his new role in Hitman, his work on bringing one of his favourite video games, Bloodborne, to the big screen and why he misses the “whimsical” days of the internet.
