Coronavirus: First British death – BBC News

Published

on

The latest UK case of coronavirus is the first to be contracted within the country rather than abroad. The man walked into a GP surgery in Surrey, in the south of England, feeling unwell. It came as another patient, who’d been quarantined on a cruise ship in Japan, became the first Briton to die from the illness. The respiratory disease, which causes pneumonia-like symptoms, has infected almost 84,000 people in more than 50 countries.

Hugh Pym, the BBC Health Editor reports on developments in the spread of coronavirus in the UK and globally. Plus we look at the the impact on businesses and answer your questions about the virus, and how to prevent it spreading.

The fact this has nearly has been going on for 4 years soon, I’m and so grateful I survived and got covid 19 after it went down. I’m so grateful! Never take things for granted because one day you could be the first to get a virus and die. I’m so sorry for people that have a loss in their family because of covid 19.

I remember when the human race was at the bracing for this nightmare aka COVID-19 to unleash in the realms of civilization! And this cruise ship was at the centre of discussion.

The events which unfolded felt like something out of a thriller movie script, with the outcome very much predictable. The events that unfolded involving this commercial ship, and a senior British couple casted as the protagonists!

Despite reports of COVID-19 outbreaks inside the ship, passengers would only be allowed to disembark the cruise ship after it reached its destination course! People were stuck in that time bomb for 3 days (i can recall). Was a disaster waiting to happen! I think the British couple contracted the virus… And at this present moment in time do not know their status!

Everything is an illusion! This life is nothing but a script, it's up to us to decide the role we play in the plot!

Christa Pike: 911 calls reveal chaos after failed execution and other stories | Global News Podcast

Published

on

Authorities in the US state of Tennessee have released dramatic phone calls that were made to the emergency services after the botched execution of Christa Pike. They show there was chaos and confusion as emergency responders tried to work out whether a request for help in the execution chamber was genuine and not a prank call, allegedly leading to a delay in the inmate being taken to hospital. Christa Pike, who killed Colleen Slemmer in 1995, was given two lethal injections that failed to kill her. Her case is now in uncharted territory as she is thought to be the only person to have survived an execution attempt by lethal injection.

The women exposing abuse in Iraq | BBC News

Published

on

This video contains distressing details.

Violence against women and girls in Iraq is widespread, but under reported, according to UN experts.

For incidents of sexual violence, there are no official figures. Human rights campaigners in the country say more needs to be done to protect women who speak out. They say threats and incitement against survivors should be investigated as crimes.

BBC Arabic’s Sally Nabil has been to Baghdad to speak to women who say family and social pressures discouraged them from speaking out, but have now decided to break their silence.
