How long does it take to get to Mars? – BBC News

Published

on

Why are there so many attempts to get to Mars at the moment?

The United Arab Emirate’s Hope satellite was despatched last week and now China has launched its first rover mission to the red planet.

Nasa’s Perseverance Rover is scheduled to take off on 30th July.

Well, summer 2020 is a popular time for missions to the red planet because of the way the planets align – but how long does it take to get there?

Landing on Mars is known as the “seven minutes of terror”, and there are lots of reasons why.

Here BBC Science Correspondent Laura Foster explains how long it takes to get there and why it’s so difficult.

I just had an idea. If we build several space stations in the same orbit as Mars we could travel to the space station we are closest to then wait for Mars to pass by and fly down to the planet. It would be always be the shortest distance. Much more spaceships could land. We wouldn't have to wait 2 years to get close. Mars could pass a space station every month if we built 24 of them.

7 months? Who you are u fooling humans in their current life form can never reach mars. On top 50 years after landing on moon we still struggle to land on moon again. I can't believe NASA is selling BS to world. In its shortest distance light takes 30 min to reach earth that means you found about rover landing 30 min after it landed. WOW

No we don't travel to mars like that. The spacecraft/satellite travels in earth's orbit and by gradually increasing the acceleration, it extends its orbit and that orbit meets the position where mars will be in next 7 months

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith in Washington.

Donald Trump scraps threat of 20% fee on Strait of Hormuz cargo | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has reversed his threat of a 20% fee on all Strait of Hormuz cargo shipping, as the US battles to break Iran’s hold on the waterway.

He said the toll would be replaced by trade and investment deals with Gulf states, just hours before the US resumes a blockade of Iranian ports.

It follows renewed strikes between the US and Iran, which triggered a sharp rise in oil prices as tanker traffic through the Strait has virtually stalled.
