‘There would have been a TERRIBLE economic crisis without QE’ argues Vicky Pryce

Published

on

‘There are loads of negative things about quantitative easing that you can point at, however, we would have had a terrible economic crisis if we didn’t have QE.’

Vicky Pryce & Jacob Rees-Mogg discuss whether the Bank of England’s monetary policy is to blame for inflation.

What is QE? I wish people would stop refering to things in capital letters only and spare a thought for those of us who see this is like a foreign language!

Not sure why she was cut off, didnt hear the punchline, if there was one. Never sure if economists see the economy in the round anyway.
Post WW2 planning failures and nationalisation is the root cause of issues we face today. USA held us to ransom to ensure the "Evil Empire" faded away, gave an economic advantage to Germany and Japan at our expense. Our economy as a result remains unstable. Thatcher got most things right to correct the balance and take the shackles of our remaining industries. Finance boomed, Telecomms, Pharma, thrived. Traditional industries failed to compete. Shipbuilding being a classic example where Thatcher poured in millions to modernise the design and manufacture of ships. The industry rejected those changes and nearly all gone. The "crisis" they refer to may have been sparked by Covid, and QE was merely a response, not a fix. Fundamental change is needed. And it is cultural, not political.

maybe it would have been a good idea not to lock the economy down in the first place, eh? You litterly created the problem and then expected a thank you when you magically solved it!

Clearly if the UK had followed Sweden with regard to lock downs then we would be in this mess . It's your Consocialist government Jacob.

Completely incorrect. QE just secured the bank bonuses and the advantages held by the richest.
97% of QE ended up in the accounts of the richest 2%.

The UK needs IMF's structural reforms and a new IMF loan. By the way, the new IMF chief is an Indian. The UK needs to open up its economy further and remove all protectionist barriers, subsidies on healthcare and education and also being in pension reforms. Micro-credit loans should be provided to people to be able to buy food and meet the cost of living crisis.

    January 4, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Yes the incompetent BOE is responsible for inflation and QE was one of the main drivers. However it doesn’t help that the Supermarkets are profiteering and Ofcom is in the pockets of the energy suppliers.
