In March the UK is set to start rolling out their new blue passports. These new design passports hark back to 1921 blue passports Britain held until the 80s when the colour changed to burgundy to unify with other EU nations. In this video we tell you all you need to know about the new blue passports and answer your questions from Instagram.

As an American, I really liked the UK passport in Burgandy! Blue is so common and boring, but I get the part in wanting to be back to its original color, and wanting to show the world of their sovereignty 🇬🇧💙

    The colour doesn't matter.
You just have far fewer freedoms and possibilities with the new one.
And now obviously with the old one as well.
You can no longer live, work, study or take a partner from one of the EU member states, if you only have the right to that blue passport.
I will never apply for one. Luckily I don't need to.
The sight of it would just make me incredibly sad.
It is the biggest symbol of all that British citizens have lost.

An excellent reward of Brexit for the British people having passports in a colour of their own choice.

They look pathetic, they are far less powerful, and give you much less privileges. Thank god I have access to an Irish passport, now much more powerful and useful….. there's brexit for you.

Noticed you left the fact the old red one had 'European Union' above everything else.

The coat of arms in the blue passport reads: "Your father smelt of elderberries" & "Your mother was a hamster" 😂

  12. @mauriceoreilly9955

    January 3, 2024 at 1:57 pm

I like how "Honi soit qui mal y pense" is replaced by "Your mother was a hamster",

and "Dieu est mon droit" by "Your father smelt of elderberries".

This must be one of the truly great triumphs of Brexit!
Seriously though, I note that, on both Burgundy red and blue passports, the request/requirement (on the Britannic Majesty page) refers to the 'bearer'. Who is this bearer and how does she/he relate to the Kingdom? Subject or citizen? Does the UK have citizens?
On my Irish passport (the only passport I have), the bearer is clearly identified as 'saoránach d'Éirinn' ('a citizen of Ireland').
What, pray, is the status of our former European friends and current Britannic neighbours who share our island or inhabit the one next to us?

  20. @thomism1016

    January 3, 2024 at 1:57 pm

VERY SHALLOW!!! …No, this is not a jibe at TLDR. Rather at the pro-Brexit government. What benefits has this brought the British people? Further more widespead and unfettered visa free travel? Broader business opportunities? NO!!! IT JUST HARKENS BACK TO THE IMPERIALIST DAYS OF EMPIRE. GREAT!!!

we were not forced to change the passport. we agree to show unity with the eu, passport are decided by the caa and the united nations. croatia still has a blue passport part of eu

I had a couple of the old hardcover passports. One as a 7-year-old and one as an 18-year-old. I still have the latter, cancelled with the corner cut off. This is the first I've heard that is blue? To me, it looked black, has always looked black – and looking at it with the utmost scrutiny, now – still looks black!

  23. @DigitalAndInnovation

    January 3, 2024 at 1:57 pm

Grrrr. The EU has worked with the UK for so many years and even allowed the currency to be different. This is a slap in the face.

Two years later – I have just received my new passport. I can confirm that they look black unless you hold them under a strong light in which case you can just make out a slight navy blue tinge.

Always found burgundy one strange. When mum came back and brought me here with her. It was the old blue passport. Only real difference is no number on front like old one other wise it's same design as it's always been. It's not as ridged it's more European Union style today than then.
