£222 Billion: The Cost of Brexit So Far? – Brexit Explained
In the last few weeks, there have been a number of articles and posts claiming that Brexit has cost the UK more since the referendum than all of the membership fees it’s ever paid the EU. As much as that might be an appealing argument to some, it’s not actually all that accurate. So in this video, we look at the analysis which led to the articles and decide if the reports are true?

It seems pretty much a certainty that Andy Burnham will be the next British prime minister. Exactly when it happens depends on a few factors. We outline some of the reasons an early general election is likely.

It may be that Brexiters will take notice once the fact that brexit has cost the UK more in the last 6 years than the Napoleonic wars,WWI and WWII combined becomes better known
@johnrandall466
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
I can see no interest in this comparison. Any analysis should be based on the comparison between what happened after Brexit and the projected effect of staying in the EU. The cost of payments to the EU prior to Brexit should be compared to the advantages that accrued to the UK from membership.

I do not see how relatively seamless economic and social integration is a bad thing. Today from the video "UK shows US how to dump a lying…..", makes me wonder how much influence the lies of Boris Johnson had on Great Britain's masses.
@robbyduffy1

There’s cost. And then there’s ‘cost’. UK will hurt for decades before turning a ‘profit’ from this ‘investment’… if ever.

Just the start. The Tory boi's pulled the plug. They'll see less Revenue from EU workers Income Tax, Less from VAT, less from Businesses. All in the brexit plan that was scribbled on the back of an out of date Lottery ticket.
@misswarda78
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
Whatever the financial cost,,, that shall remain to be seen,,, the political and social cost has been tragic. Wasting time talking about NI, (resolved almost 30years ago) trying to re-establish trading systems that have long been irrelevant as members of the customs union/single market. Re-awakening nationalism and divisions.
All time wasting when we should be focusing on the environment, health social development. Bloody tragic.
@rockerjim8045
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
If we have spent 200Bish in the last 4.5 years setting up Brexit. That would be 15ish years membership. That's a hell of a large deposit for a project with an unknown future.
@williampatrickfagan7590
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
What is not alluded to is the intangible benefits of cooperation that takes place within the Union.
For example, the E U CE certification saves the U K a fortune from the necessity of setting up and maintaining a standards agency to certify eberying from new British made washing machines, toys, electrical items . The list is endless. The U K left the E U and left behind them thousands of arrangments for cost saving, for example, the right to fly from Leeds to Lisbon, and then to Paris. Next year it must return to Leeds from Lisbon.
The Europol database will be locked to British police forces,accessed over 100 million times a year.
The U K seem to know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Why do people always say that will be only a short therm economic hit when nobody has come up with a plan for after brexit, MPs cant even make a plan for the borders for customs.
I can say aswel that by next week I'll be a billionaire with no plan on how to do it, but that doesn't mean that I'll actually become a billionaire

The economic and social downside of Brexit is a complete deal breaker.
The result will harm the UK for years to come.
@MK-xc9to
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
The EU Trade has grown since the 2016 Referendum , the UK Trade has gone down , even if the cost of Brexit dont reach 222 Billion its worth of 40 years of membership instead of 47 .
But thats not the full truth , the real Brexit Bill arrive at the end of 2021 , after one year ( no Deal ? ) Brexit … , the UK stll has not prepared for a NO Deal = they must build addtional checkpoints , must hire people for the Customs , must train them … , and dont forget the Services .. , without a Deal = No access to the EU … . Everyone who said , Brexit will be cheaper than Membership is a Big Fat Liar …
@keithgnield
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
Cost of Brexit, £222 billion. Cost of WWI (expressed in 2020 terms), £187 billion. I find that utterly staggering. WWI was cheaper than Brexit. So the four years of war was cheaper than Brexit. Are we stark raving bonkers?
@carlosenriquez2092
January 2, 2024 at 11:35 pm
Good presentation but the figure that covers the UKs membership cost is pretty much useless, unless you can get a good estimation of what the UKs economy would be had it never elected to join the EU to begin with. It is also important to emphasize the lackluster condition of the UKs economy prior to entry theres a reason the UK pleaded with De Gaulle repeatedly for entry.

But yet we voted Brexit, It's like the people of England could not give a shit about there things.

UK's EU referendum was a TORY move to cling on to power. Nothing else really (taking into concideration all the wealthy interests represented in that party). They all knew BREXIT will make the UK vulnerable as hell and that the people who will end up paying for it the most are the very same people who voted for Brexit to happen for whatever reason. I think that Brexit is 1 step forwards and 50 steps backward. If nothing else grand comes out of this mess, then lets hope for Ireland and Scotland to at last gain their complete territorial souvereignity from the well overdue English rule.

While it is true that Brexit isn’t the only reason it’s most likely main reason why it has happened and you also failed to mention about the money that UK was receiving back from European Union. Also The real costs will be seen in the next few years after Brexit is finalized when border checks and the tariffs will kick in making any kind of business in and with UK more expensive and less profitable. And also UK was a sovereign nation and the whole argument is giant bullshit

If you're using real costs (which I believe factors in inflation) and the people posting comparisons aren't factoring in inflation then that could easily explain the differing answers.
