I'm an Australian British citizen, I inherited my British citizenship from my Dad who was born in England.

I'm having real trouble filling out the online register to vote form because the form doesn't take into account that there are British citizens who were born overseas and have never set foot in the UK.

I have a British passport, and the Queen says I'm alright on it.
Any tips on how to register to vote?
I can't exactly head in to my local UK Electoral Registration Office.

    Most Anglophiles reaction:
Must be registered to vote: check.
Must be 18 or over: tick. starts getting excited
Be a British, Irish, or Commonwealth citizen: D*MNIT!! There's ALWAYS a catch, isn't there. 🙁
I've learned how to replace 'or' with 'our', and when to add or drop definite articles. Surely, that should be enough?

Why do people even have to register in the first place? What's the point? I live in Belgium, and here everyone can automatically vote from the age of 18. No need to register, ever. I believe we are all automatically registered when we turn 18. Why do certain countries have the extra step to register first? It seems like an unneccesairy step to take, making it more difficult to vote. That does not seem overly democratic to me…?

Comparing the information in this video to my voting experience here in Canada, I can safely say that registering to vote in Canada is much simpler than in the UK. In Canada you can register to vote online or at your local government office, after which you are eligible to vote for life. Each election you receive a card stating where and when you go to vote. Once at the polls you must display photo ID with your name and home address on it such as your drivers licence, and surrender the card with the voting info on it in exchange for your ballot. The system is largely automated, highly consistent, and very convenient. In Canada knowing whether you’re eligible to vote is as easy as remembering whether or not you’ve voted in a previous election.

I don't think I as a Canadian, as formal British colony of the British Commonwealth, can vote. Sad.

Serious question: who are “qualifying Commonwealth citizens”?

As a bare hypothetical, would an EU citizen who is also a Canadian citizen be able to vote in these elections?

I was just about to send you guys an email asking to do a quick video about this exact topic!

I was also going to see if you could talk about the rules on polling day itself.
Such as when the polls open and close, and when you need to be at the station in order to be eligible to cast your ballot. Ive seen a few things around as long as you turn up before 10pm, they have to let you in to vote you cannot be turned away. Similarly I saw something about provisional ballots, if they dont have you down at the station,

Hi been subscribed to your channel for some time and think you make great content. Can I please ask if you would consider doing a video on the parties in the election and what they stand for. 27. @ripp_

    December 29, 2023 at 3:08 am

You "have to be resident at an address in the UK" should be followed by "or live or spend the majority of your time there" You can register to vote without an permanent or any physical address (such as a house), you can use an address of where you spend most of your time

  28. @grantritchie3429

  29. @jacquesantoineportal

    December 29, 2023 at 3:08 am

It took me 4 months to register to vote. PLEASE START THE PROCESS ASAP. Admittedly I am an odd case here, not having a national insurance number, and needing to register for postal voting abroad.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE TAX OFFICE TO FIND YOUR NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER!
Your voting registration office might ask you to try to find your national insurance number to make their lives easier…. To do this you'll need to send a paper form to the tax office. This process will take a month to complete and for me (as expected) was useless because I don't have a national insurance number.

You can instead add a photocopy of your passport (or other valid ID) to the paper form you'll send, and this is enough to register to vote!

I had to apply to get my right to vote twice (first one being denied for not having a national insurance number) which took 2 months. Then I had to apply for postal voting. This took another 3 attempts! The 1st one didn't go through because they thought I could not get the right to vote without a national insurance number, the 2nd one "didn't make it to the voting registration office" and the 3rd one took 2 weeks to go through.

Ps: If like me you don't have a national insurance number, do not believe them when they tell you "you automatically get one when you turn 16". THIS IS WRONG!

As a British citizen living in Sweden I'm already registered and set up for postal vote. Even if you don't want to go out and vote due to the time of year then PLEASE set up a vote by post or proxy. Whatever your political views the only way the UK will truly move forward is if everyone votes.

  39. @AndreaCrossett

    December 29, 2023 at 3:08 am

So, to clarify, qualifying Commonwealth citizens would be citizens of Commonwealth countries that have residency in the UK?

  40. @peelwell6581

    December 29, 2023 at 3:08 am

I am a qualifying citizen of the commonwealth, i am here for my education so i have no idea what my insurance number is, i thought that was crucial to vote, it isn't?

  46. @hoggif

    December 29, 2023 at 3:08 am

That is so complicated. Were I live, they know my nationality and that I exist and that I am alive. Therefore I can vote. When I got to adult age, I was automatically given the right to vote without doing anything.
If I live abroad, I can vote in the local embassy or by mail.

  47. @cucco1

    December 29, 2023 at 3:08 am

You have to register to be able to vote? Lol
