Selling weapons to Saudi Arabia is virtually supporting human rights abuses. Trading with that country is bad enough, but here it is. Britain's already done a lot of unpopular shit over time, let's at least put a stop to it now. Be on the right side of the conversation for once.

Has this channel now moved away from brexit uk shaming? Going after uk government now over arms deals that have been going on for well over a decade. Ideally you’d move to mainland Europe and realise the governments there go well beyond the UK levels of corruption and deceit.

People need to make they minds up. They want government to fight pandemic more effectively, but they also want to send foreign aid. UK should have first priority to its own citizens. All foreign help programs are purely diplomatic and have very little to do with helping people. If these programs at the same time can do some good for people who need help, that's awesome and what you should want. But don't forget that government is not a charity. If it would not be profitable for government to help, they won't. It's as simple as that. They have their budget that has been hugely hit by Brexit and pandemic, do you want to spend money to help others or your own citizens that are struggling to put food on their tables? Or you can do both, borrow a lot of money from foreign powers and push your problems for the future generations. If that's your thing, well done. I bet you live on credit hoping you will leave your children 2 million on debt when you die. Populism level is higher than ever. Stop and think.

Thing is, if we don't give them weapons, they'll just buy some from Russia and China, not selling them weapons won't do anything. Its a lose lose situation from a humanitarian point of view.

  14. @nothernstar2576

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

the most ironic thing is the fact that Britain will only harm itself if it won't sell weapons: if they won't, the Russians or Chinese will, so the Saudis will get their stuff anyways, and Britain won't get the money

  15. @darthcaedus5124

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

Why is it the uk governments responsibility to give aid?

  16. @FreaKCSGOHacker

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

They're all talking about aid budgets and arms sales but everyone seems to not want to even discuss that should the guns stop rolling, the rebels are gonna topple the Yemenese government. So, give the people Yemen the Aid they need and form some sort of way to beat back the rebels.

  17. @LudvigIndestrucable

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

The irony being that we can only afford international aid by selling the arms being used that makes the aid necessary.

The UK has to be one of the biggest global sources of aid since the British Empire was one of the biggest benefactors of the resource extraction that went on since the beginning of the colonial period. It's not something it brag about, it's just what we owe.

  22. @ietomos7634

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

"Oh look at us we've given a bunch of money to the arts". yeah sure, but that's nowhere near enough and you clearly don't care about them as you left out visa free touring for musical artist from the Brexit deal when the EU would've just given it to us. Not to even mention "Fatima's next job could be in cyber"

  26. @har3036

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

The least the UK government could do, is to force the armaments industry to give s percentage of its profits in aid to Yemen. I wonder how some people ever get a good night's sleep.

It's British neo-imperialism all over again. Supporting their puppets in Saudi Arabia rather than helping a country in dire need of aid. Classic imperialist move. Shows the world that Britain hasn't changed one bit, they haven't changed at all. Still true to their imperialist and colonial roots, can't be trusted with protecting human rights at all.

  32. @GuyMahoney

Fairly sure starving out Yemen and further arming Saudi Arabia brings the war closer to an end. Maintaining both sides is what keeps a war ongoing

  33. @simonwiggins8570

    December 29, 2023 at 10:26 am

Weapons are sold for defence and attack purposes. Saudi Arabia has genuine security concerns in their own backyard of Yemen after a violet coup by Iranian backed Houthi's. So selling arms to Saudi Arabia is no different then selling to Egypt, Israel, Ukraine, Afghanistan or anyone else. If we have concern that our weapons are being used to directly target civilians then we can of course pressure the Saudi's in other ways and with our allies to stop and rethink their strategy. We definitely don't need to stop arms sales. Such action takes all strategic influence we have away and arguably harms the people we want to protect in the long-run.
