The potential fallout on human rights and environmental impact in the UK is of great concern to me here.

Not really even from a level playing field perspective, it's honestly the least of our worries if UK businesses can undercut EU ones. I'm more concerned about what's going to happen to what little is left of labour unions, workers rights, electronic rights, and so forth.

I really don't trust the UK government to not merrily decimate each of these and more once no longer beholden to a higher authority enforcing them. And as a UK citizen this gives me great cause for concern. Already workers rights here are pretty poor and have been for a long time, I foresee that getting far worse in years to come.

I'm sorely tempted to relocate back to the EU first chance I get and renounce my citizenship. Circumstances prevent that currently, but this country does a poor job of representing my views and beliefs, and I'm of firm belief that's only going to get worse.

Brexit hypocrisy gets worse…”Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a Leave campaigner in the run-up to the 2016 Brexit referendum, has confirmed a new 4×4 car will be built in France.” Today’s news. He”s worked out that the U.K. is buggered and is moving into the EU…and he helped fund Brexit.!!!

hmm if it was up to me. EU can fish in british waters. but it has to be registered and paid a small fee. nothing massive. just a reasonable price. for example 400£ im not sure what the true prices are but it atleast gives a reason for both sides to agree as the british waters will remain british. but the EU can still have some fishing boats there despite paying a small fee.

Brexit is all a joke – and like all good jokes, it's been carefully rehearsed and planned offstage beforehand.

On level playing field…. As a EU company buying knowledge from the UK my cost price for development dropped 30% over the years just because the decline of the pound. It is now almost cheaper to buy enginering in the UK then in India…..

Unlike the U.K. EU countries will not be free to regain global competitiveness or strike better trade deals and their payments to the EU are going to go up to cover the shortfall of us leaving just as we get to keep our tax payers money to spend at home. If they ever agree it, EU countries are also about to be liable for a load more debt making life even worse for a contributor like Germany forced to transfer yet more of its tax payers money to bail out the likes of Italy. By leaving, the U.K. has dodged this bullet. If you’re talking about the economics you really should consider that for the EU there is no potential upside and perhaps this is largely why, instead of negotiating a trade deal in good faith, they are so keen to hold us back with the ‘level playing field’ and EU Court oversight. It certainly would be disastrous for the U.K. to sign up to any of that.

Honestly, I don't really care anymore. I just don't want to drag this out forever, brexit should have happened years ago.

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

What happened to the Northern Irish border issue? Last I heard, there was basically going to be a border down the Irish Sea, but the govt. just decided to lie and say there wouldn't be one, and then they broke international law and the withdrawal agreement to get overriding control of it, and the EU started the process of taking the UK govt. to court. Why is this no longer an outstanding issue in trade talks?

  14. @Violincase

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

In about 3 weeks we're faced with the frightening triple-whammy of Covid, economic depression and Brexit. There are limitations on what can be done to control the damage caused by the first two, therefore it's a no-brainer that we absolutely prioritise negotiating the least harmful Brexit possible. That's not realistic by year's end! Let's get real: it is now vital to effect AN EMERGENCY EXTENSION TO THE TRANSITION PERIOD, during which we dump the machismo politics and focus on the economics.

  15. @mcvgs1780

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

Ah Brexit, a tale as old as time.

Edit: I see a lot of Brits blaming the government but let's not forget the people voted for Brexit in a referendum. It's not just shitty government rules lawyering but also a public that is undereducated about the economic repercussions of leaving the EU.

No deal chaos is preferable for rentier economy. Real economy in UK doesn't matter for rulling class, as their income is based on rent (wealth extraction from working class) and overseas investment in financial sector (money laundering). The real purpose of brexit is regulatory chaos. By not implementing tight NI border and EU anti tax evasion directive, rich get richer by not paying taxes. London will see influx of tax avoider's money from EU and boom of companies like Amazon that thrive on wage slavery and non-existent corporate tax.

  21. @HrHaakon

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

If the UK wants to be completely sovereign, then let them. Just let the EU be completely sovereign in return. Which means that the EU shouldn't have to accept and UK goods, because the EU, as a sovereign… thingie, is sovereign.

  22. @lazypaladin

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

Am I the only one thinking: The reason we're not hearing anything about Brexit is because there is a global pandemic that needs to be dealt with first?!

  23. @Theorimlig

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

The UK should obviously get control over their waters, but if they want significant trade with the EU they should accept the level playing field. The arbitration bit is difficult because a European court may not be neutral, but some sort of arbitration is definitely necessary especially since the UK government is not above reneging on deals and promises when it suits them.

  24. @wanderer10k

    December 28, 2023 at 9:35 am

But what % of GDP is fishing for OTHER countries. That's also a question to ask as you'll have alot of pissed off European fishermen….that means that it's a bargaining chip in the UK's favour????

The british shot themselves seriously in the foot in leaving the union. We, on the continent sigh and say : "islanders will be islanders". It is going to be very tough for the british people the next five years on top of the corona pandemic that hit hard in the UK. Still no hard feelings. We wish our neighbours the very best!

    Brexit negotiations:

Thirty years ago a French colleague went to Japan to sign a deal. He was there for a week. He met the Chairman once, a brief greeting.

All week long the Japanese wanted to take him sightseeing, get him drunk, and discuss irrelevant issues like size of the pallets, colour of the packaging, wording on the labels.

Every time he tried to discuss pricing they changed the subject or set completely unrealistic prices.

At the end of the week my colleague packed his suitcase and checked out of his hotel, without a deal. He was going to get a taxi, but the chairman arrived in a huge chauffeured Toyota Century limousine. He apologised for not having time to discuss the deal, as he was so busy, but would accompany him to the airport.

Within sight of Narita airport the Chairman said “it is a pity for you to go home without a deal. Perhaps we could agree on xxxxxx Yen per Kilo?”

My colleague, hung over, tired and desperate, and in sight of the departure drop off, agreed. The Chairman pulled out a pre written contract and a pen. It was the lowest price we ever agreed to. We were completely out negotiated by Japan.

This is exactly the tactic in play now.
