As a Swede I can inform you that princess cake is not supposed to be covered with sugar fondant but green marsipan. We never put red jam in the cake because then you make another cake which we call Opera. Princess cake only has custard and cream as filling, never jam. But even some Swedes put jam in their Princess cake without knowing that they actually make an Opera cake. Good job for first time. Go easier on the green colouring next time, it should be light green with a pink rose, not forest green with a red rose. The Opera, red jam filled cake, should have a pink marsipan cover instead of green.

It’s really easy to criticise the normals but this video showed me that they’re better than most home cooks and don’t get enough credit because they’re always overshadowed by the chefs. If I was tasked with making the cake with all the ingredients and the basic recipe I would have no clue what to do and get nowhere near the desired result and even still a sizeable distance from the normals

Chinese person at work asked “is there a Prince cake”? Hostile Swedes “NO”.

It is one of the hardest traditional Swedish cakes to make, rivalled only by Swartzwald.
With that in mind, I am very impressed with the end result. It doesn't look quite like the traditional Swedish one, but I bet it tastes just the same. It is close enough for a home bake by someone who's never worked with marzipan before.
And there's a secret Swedish people use: We buy our marzipan pre-made!

This is an older post. But Jamie sponge look much better then Barry corn bread looking sponge. Oh so Barry had a ton more custard then Jamie. That is the difference I seen in the cakes.

Go back about twenty years and Morrisons used to make these. Now I am not remotely suggesting that they were as good as a Patisserie Chef would create …. But they were lovely.

I wonder if building this in reverse would work better.
Layer a bowl with the top layer before the Marzipan then build it to the base. Plate on top and flip. Then add the Marzipan.

The extra slicing of the cake felt so unfair, because they are definitely usually not that thin. Also, chocolate on a princess cake is just wrong. But the absolute, unforgivable sacrilege is using sugar paste instead of marzipan. Sugar paste should never be anywhere near a proper prinsesstårta.
But despite that, I think that that is definitely closer to what I've seen many Swedes make as prinsesstårta. They're both very impressive, and you guys absolutely shouldn't feel like they weren't "Princess cake".
Thinking about it, I think Jamie and Barry did better than Ben would've. Ben would've put some small amount of brandy or punsch or something into the custard/cream. We all know it!
