Northern Ireland has the potential to win brexit in a big way, as an independent country. The facts are, that statistically only an average 24% of Northern Irish citizens even self-identify as Nationalist, while in practice, even fewer than that would be willing to vote for unification, as the negative financial impact on their quality of life and demographic future would be massive. The remaining 77% of Northern Irish include, non-aligned, DUP, TUV, Alliance Unionists and NICA and have all consistently resisted the many, sometimes extreme pressures applied historically, determined to stay independent from the Republic of Ireland as they simply don’t like what they see, have seen or what would be waiting for them. The Northern Irish have a socialist bias in their health and economic infrastructure, diametrically opposite to the Republic of Ireland’s American style, hustle, tax haven, leprechaun economics with a massive wealth gap, already imposing a horrific demographic, infrastructure, social, tax, cost of living and investment impact on the three Ulster counties that the Republic of Ireland control and have already driven the native working class population out of, not very inviting. Why would anyone go that route. Think this is exaggerating, delusionary, check the facts, you will be surprised. Non-aligned in no way means you will vote for unification, as is very often portrayed for the benefit of the international audience consumption, and blocking these comments as normally happens, will not change the facts, leave the comment up to take the first step to open up the discussion, breathing fresh air into discussions in Ireland about Northern Ireland. Secular independence not unification is by far the more democratic and prosperous way forward, with by far the most potential for the Northern Irish, opening up opportunities for the Northern Irish such as joining the EU as an independent country and getting the benefits of its close proximity to the UK, very unusually, actually getting the significant benefits of joining the EU as an independent country but also at a cut down subscription, all for itself. All this without removing or even reducing the democratic viability of any longer term future aspirations that the Northern Irish citizen might have. Coincidentally, also giving an independent Northern Irish government far greater bargaining power to safeguard its citizens in any future negotiations they might decide to take part in, as an independent country. I have a question for the paddies. What forms of government have been proposed for United Ireland? I would imagine the most acceptable would be a federal system comprising two states but I suppose there is also something more unitary with Dublin devolving powers to Stormont. I can't imagine a scenario where Dublin has complete power over NI. I guess there is also the possibility of full self-governance under Irish sovereignty. Something like the Crown Dependencies. Do we have any data on what the Northern Irish and Irish have to say on this?

52% of the U.K votes to leave the EU = UK leaves
80% of Éire votes to leave the UK (1918) =
UK: "Nah we are going to hold onto 6 of your county's,the most industrial ones,that we flooded with immigrants,even though 5 voted to leave,then we are going to subjugate your people to a century of apartheid and supply our immigrants with weapons,rigged democracy's and discriminatory laws ; but remember ,the EUSSR doesn't respect democracy adn is flooding our country with immigrants.
The UK is DAMN lucky ,that the EU didn't take its approach to a member voting to leave a union.
@eboyjim
December 22, 2023 at 4:29 am
First: Don't refer to Northern Irish Politics as "Irish" politics. Ireland is a sovereign state south of the Northern Irish border and half the people involved in politics in Northern Ireland don't even identify as Irish.
Second: Referring to it as a problem "across the Irish Sea" absolves the British government of its responsibility. Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Its problems are the UK's creation. Everyone in the UK, especially those in Great Britain need to take responsibility for that.
It's always funny how when something bad happens in Northern Ireland, British media refers to it as "Ireland" but when something good happens suddenly they're "British." I know this isn't intentional but it does show a blind spot even among well researched media like this.

I don’t know why you keep calling this an Irish border. The Irish didn’t put it there. It’s a British border. Also it’s not the Northern Irish protocol it’s just the Northern Ireland protocol. What about the SDLP? No mention of them???????

December 22, 2023 at 4:29 am
The NI protocol is simply a means to keep the English border in Ireland open – it was an idea first proposed by unionists, they are the ones who insisted on it in the first place. The openness of the border is an important element of the Good Friday international Agreement. If you get rid of the NI Protocol then you have to close the English border in Ireland and put up customs checks – this would directly go against the GFA. So if you get rid of the NI protocol you need to replace it with something else to keep the English border in Ireland open and to make sure that the English state is abiding by the terms of the international agreement that it signed in good faith. If unionists aren't happy with their NI Protocol then what are their suggestions for replacing it while abiding by the GFA (the actual law). The NI Protocol has to stay until someone else comes up with a better idea and if no one has a better idea then they should put up and shut up as they say

Ok can we learn how to pronounce Simon Coveney's name properly. Its pronounced Simon [COVE] [KNEE]!! I know Irish names are difficult for English people to pronounce I fully get that but please make a little effort. Every time I hear an English person attempt to pronounce Gallagher or Oisin, Saoirse or Tim Cahill and so on its always wrong and every English person for some reason makes the exact same mistake and its so cringe – just a small bit of effort would be appreciated by a lot of people trust me. After all no one would pronounce the name Thierry Henri as Terry Henry now would they!!!! Please no one get insulted by this – I absolutely mean the above comment in the nicest possible way, call it friendly advice rather than a critical comment
