Why Does Only One Place in the UK not have an MP?

There is one area in the UK that doesn’t have a voice in the House of Commons. Their representative can’t vote in parliament and they can’t voice their opinions on the floor. How is this allowed in a modern democracy and will it ever change?

It seems pretty much a certainty that Andy Burnham will be the next British prime minister. Exactly when it happens depends on a few factors. We outline some of the reasons an early general election is likely.

Problem with changing the system is that only MPs may enter the chamber, whilst in session; ergo, you cannot strip MP status from the speaker.

True citizens do not need or want representation
Democracy is the exercise of power by individuals, not the delegation of power onto someone else.

You would think that the Crown or the government or even a member of the Lords or some committee would champion the speakers constituency.

This is surely irrelevant. An MP has other duties towards his constituents beyond mere party issues. And the Speaker still performs these duties. After all, any MP represents all constituents in the constituency, whatever their political colour. So when needed to deal with the bureaucracy or local problems, the Speaker still performs his role.

Pretty sure City of London doesn't have an MP and only a Remembrancer, it weirdly does have an MP now (well sort of) so what's the point of the Remembrancer?
Also, they have a partner MP who represents their constituency for them.

Not to mention all the constituencies with an MP who is self-serving and only turns up for awards and photoshoots, voting against matters which would help their own conscients.

December 22, 2023 at 5:30 am
The public had the change to vote in a "working" m.p and chose not too. Maybe one day some areas will use THEIR RIGHT and vote for a different party and send a message to the top 2 in power.

The people of Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have no representation in the United States Senate and they have no voting representative in the House of Representatives. With the exception of Washington, D.C., they cannot vote for the U.S. President in the general election either.

In Australia the Speaker changes every term but will usually be from the governing party. Usually a thankless job for someone who is not expected to go any further in their career.

Lindsay Hoyle is, and has been for many years, a really good constituency MP. He may not represent a mainstream party, but he does represent his constituents. If something needs doing, he knows how to get it done.
@jayfielding1333
December 22, 2023 at 5:30 am
The speaker can vote, for example, in the case of a tied vote, but there is a convention that sets out how they should vote in such situation, which as far as I know is universally adhered to.

@tayetrotman
December 22, 2023 at 5:30 am
Personally I do think the Speaker needs to be an MP, because otherwise the only people they remain accountable to are fellow politicians who I don’t trust. So long as they remain an MP, even if the other major parties don’t stand against them, if they do something really wrong their constituents can remove them via by-election.
Instead, I think we should give that one constituency two MPs and make it so the Speaker is not allowed to do anything constituency-related.
This way this constituency gets represented and there are no concerns about having two politicians advocating for a constituency’s interests
@MegaPaulm
December 22, 2023 at 5:30 am
You need to get your facts right …the by election thing won’t work because the speaker on occasions is required to vote in the event of a tied vote and votes in accordance with Speaker Dennisons precedent and only an MP can vote to which he would not be one with your logic …dangerous misinformation
