France making money off a another sovereign countries waters is rediculous. The entire of the EU can fish in French waters.

We want our waters full of fish farmed in a sustainable way. Not having the whole EU come and fish it dry.

UK needs to very carefully legally with this. Under UK law Refer – The Habitats Regulations and Marine Acts would make the licenses illegal. We really need to have a maturer government, it’s quite embarrassing.

Is it unfair to deny licenses? Depends if the same rules apply to other country's ships and what percentage of them are granted permits. Also depends whether the logic behind denying licenses is valid- -if the boat passes an independent check but is denied a license anyway, then it's unfair.

There's one thing that's incorrect in this video. GPS is one of the metrics used to show evidence that French fishermen have fished in UK waters but its not the only metric. According to Jersey's Minister for External Relations, Ian Gorst, the French fishermen only have to supply a handwritten logs showing that they have been in UK waters. The vast majority of these rejected licences are French fishermen who cannot prove this which likely means they never actually have fished in the UK's waters between 2012 and 2016 but just want to have the ability to do so in the future.

I'm from Jersey but I'm also half-French on my mother's side but I have to say the French have acted appallingly and there's no excusing a larger nation threatening to cut off power to a much smaller nation (which is against the Geneva Convention btw) just because they didn't like the fact they signed up to a deal and now have buyer's regret. The French fishermen have always acted incredibly arrogant in Jersey's waters and have decimated our local ecosystems which their huge trawler nets and have been consistently putting Jersey fishermen (who are more likely have run family-operated fishing businesses) out of business. French fishermen actually invaded a small group of islands called the Ecrehous in 1993 and 1994 just off Jersey claiming these islands were French when they have never been French and have been apart of Jersey since 1204.

If this was to escalate into a war what countries would have to by treaty support each nation vs what countries are likely to support each side. I know this is extremely unlikely but I would like to know since this would be a war with both sides in nato.

6:33 fish industry is not important in the UK because no-one buys fish! Ever noticed how little fish there is in a supermarket compared to meat? In France fish is a big thing, plus the fish from Normandy and Bretagne is distributed in the entire country making it very important.

Should make you remember that the British-French alliance from the World Wars was the exception, not the rule historically speaking. Heck, even a decade before the start of WW I a war between Brits and French looked much more likely than a war between Brits and Germans with the French in the British side.

How do you know French boats are entitled to any more licenses?

    December 20, 2023 at 8:45 pm

Nice to see you feel into the same trap as much of the press as not understanding there is a difference between the UK and Jersey; and unaware that Jersey is currently both a pawn to both sides but also upset with both the UK and France, in the case of the UK because the infringed Jersey's Sovereignty!

  25. @skypheonixdragon122

They are both being petty but France should be thankful that Britain didn't pull out a no u card and just start seizing French fishing ships. Then they threaten to turn off an essential for thousands just to get one over on the UK for the next election. Its petty and the fact France is taking it so seriously is proof enough that this is simply just to make him popular among the French population due to France and Britain having long standing rivalries. Britain isn't exempt either. Pulling a navy gun boat on a bunch of civilian ships was never going to be a good move and for 0.1% of their GDP is way more petty than France. But the fact French fishermen blockaded a port just because they could and than started whining when Britain responded says a lot. I could go on but they are both petty, irresponsible and politically motivated messes.

    The Independent.
Johnson, well known around the world as a despicable liar, lazy lowlife scumbag and fat scruffy spaffer in chief, is facing the prospect of a “cash for votes” inquiry into why his party used public money to “blackmail” its own MPs. During last week’s row over the long list of Paterson/Johnson sleaze enquiries, the Conservative Party whips office told backbenchers from the "Red Wall" their constituency areas would lose funding if they failed to vote with the government. Now the gimpish cabinet secretary Simon Case is to investigate the allegations – which everyone including all opposition parties, deaf and blind groups and inmates of Strangeways say amounts to yet another gross misuse of public funds and total disregard of parliamentary rules. The clown minister’s spokesarsehole confirmed the reports when questioned about them on Friday while showing complete contempt for Brexit voters, flag wavers and Red Wall constituents. In a letter to Mr Case, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said it has been proven that the government was “consistently threatening to withhold vital investment from communities across the UK, in an effort to blackmail backbenchers into voting in an unconscionable and immoral way. “It is unthinkable that local communities would be punished by having vital funding taken away, just because their deceitful Tory MPs attempt to defend the indefensible. Johnson, regarded widely as a waste of oxygen, said "the Red Wall voters kindly lent me their vote, it is now up to me how I best use it against them, after all, they all say they knew what they were voting for"
