RECIPE-LESS PORK PIE COOK OFF!! | Sorted Food

Published

on

Who else loves PORK PIES as much as we do? It’s a traditional English meat pie that’s filled with pork, surrounded by a layer of jelly and cased inside a hot water crust pastry. The perfect accompaniment to a cold pint of lager… and the perfect battle dish for our normals, Barry and Jamie.

Watch them go head to head in the ULTIMATE cook off and comment down below to let us know who your winner is!

I am eternally jealous that meat pies never really became a thing here in the States for some reason. We need to rectify this.

Stop putting mustard in everything. There is no need . It ruins the taste of everything it touches. Mustard is not an ingredient in pork pies

Suprising: for me I dont give a rats a$$ about how food looks, better taste is what makes me happy❤
So for me sounds that Jamies pie was tastier?

Having seen the most recent episode of their alphabetical journey of the worlds most famous dishes, I’d love to see a recipeless battle of the Wigan Slappy 😂 I’m thinking the whole shebang too, tasking the normals with making a dough for the rolls, a pastry for their pies and then giving them an assortment of ingredients on the table for them to select from for their filling 😂😂 we saw Barry and Jamie task Ebbers and Mike with making this dish from scratch having been provided with the correct ingredients but I’d love to see Baz and Spaff attempt to create a Wigan Slappy from scratch by having to choose ingredients from the table that are given to them in the correct weights and measures to give them a fighting chance 😂😂

Watching these videos genuinely shows me how much the vast majority of us normal home cooks rely on recipes to create dishes and the difficulty and trouble at hand if a recipe is not available 😂 this video showed that they both knew what components had to be incorporated in the end dish but had no idea how to make them, how to integrate them and also how to achieve a similar result to what was presented for them to aim for 😂 I’ve eaten many pork pies but would have no clue how to make one unless a recipe was provided 😂

Give Jamie props – he accidentally made a terrine. If he had done it with rabbit instead of pork itd be a heck of a rabbit pie

I have always wanted to make a hot water crusted pie. I am in houston, texas, and hot water crusts are not common here. My question 3:14 to you is about the flours. In the US, our flours are classified differently. Are you requiring the mixing of All Purpose Flour and bread flour? A more direct explanation, with US viewers also in mind would be lovely.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻💋🌸Thank you.💐

Why, for the love of all that is good, does Jamie ALWAYS use the smallest pan he can find?! Bigger pans is better, especially if you’re trying to fry off the moisture from something! Please Jamie, use a bigger pan!!

I’m at 11:25 and I’ve paused the video to write this. Jamie’s looks better but I think Barry’s is going to taste better. But you both did a really good job and certainly better than I would of done, picture if you will a 46 year old toddler throwing a tantrum

I have only eaten it once and did not know it was supposed to be cold, so was disappointed. I would like to try again now that I know what it is. I had a ploughman's lunch at a pub across from Windsor castle and had the best ham in my whole life and great cheese. A memory I will never forget.

The pastry should be made with bread flour and kneaded for five minutes to develop gluten to give the pastry structure and left to cool in the fridge for a couple of hours before shaping.

Watching back old episodes, one things I don't like is when the Chefs cringe or get snippy at the normals for not knowing what to do… when there's no recipe… as if this is stuff everyone just knows how to make…

  29. @thomasnelson5758

    December 27, 2023 at 4:16 pm

Barry has been crushing these recipe less challenges!! Where is this intuition and intelligence in the Pass it On challenges then??? lmao

Pork pies just look so … odd to an American. Now I need to make some!!

  32. @korvisus

    December 27, 2023 at 4:16 pm

i cook something new multiple times a week. sometimes a recipe simply doesnt exist and it has sprung from my mind… other times a recipe exists, and i just look at the ingredients to get an idea of what is in it, then go for it. cooking with a recipe is boring and you dont learn nearly as much that way. i am no master chef, but i love cooking for people, and they love eating my food… but i dont even remember the last time i used a measuring utensil for measuring. im not saying that a recipe has no value or no place… it does. but cooking without a recipe is not a scary or intimidating thing. just go for it @.@

  33. @Puzzbone

Honestly think Jamie should of won that one. In my opinion, looks can never supersede how something tastes. Taste is always the most important thing in food.
