Australia vs Facebook and Google – what’s the row about? – BBC News

Published

on

People have been responding to Facebook blocking its users in Australia from sharing news, in response to a proposed law which would make technology companies pay for news content on their platform.

The Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said his government will not be intimidated by Facebook, describing the move to “unfriend Australia” as arrogant and disappointing.

Users found the Facebook pages of all local and global news sites unavailable, and several government health and emergency pages were also blocked. Facebook later asserted this was a mistake and many of these pages are now back online.

Both Google and Facebook have fought the law, saying it unfairly “penalises” their platforms.

However, in contrast to Facebook, Google has in recent days signed payment deals with major Australian media outlets.

Donald Trump says ceasefire is over but US will continue talks with Tehran | BBC News

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has posted on social media that the US has agreed to a request from Tehran to continue talks, but the ceasefire is over.

After 48 hours of hostilities earlier this week, there’s been no new strikes as of Friday, but Trump’s warning shows the situation remains volatile.

Shipping traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz has once again slowed to a trickle, and this week’s hostilities means that the United Nations has suspended its plan to evacuate trapped vessels in the Strait.

Meanwhile, in Iran six days of public mourning has ended with the burial of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Andy Burnham (Almost) Wins | BBC Newscast

Today, Andy Burnham’s Labour leadership bid has been backed by 322 Labour MPs.

If no one else enters the contest, as expected, Burnham will be declared Labour leader next week before taking office as prime minister on 20 July. Burnham is currently just one short of securing 323 nominations, which is when it is mathematically impossible for a rival to reach the 81-MP threshold needed to run against him. Adam and Chris discuss.

An interim review of Personal Independence Payments (Pip) in England and Wales had found it to be “not fit for purpose”. Last year, the UK government asked Sir Stephen Timms to review whether Pip was “fair and fit for the future”. His initial report is being published on Thursday ahead of the final recommendations due in the autumn.Adam and Alex discuss with Ben Chu Policy and Analysis Correspondent, BBC Verify.

Was Prince Harry’s UK visit more trouble than it was worth? | BBC News

Published

on

Prince Harry has completed a five-day trip to the UK, to get ready for the Invictus Games and to attend charity events.

The engagements started on Tuesday in London before moving on to Birmingham.

But as always, much of the focus was on family tensions and whether there are any signs of bridges being built between the returning Sussexes and their royal relations.

The BBC’s Royal Correspondent Daniela Relph followed every twist and turn of the visit as it unfolded.
