With John Bercow stepping down as speaker, Parliament needed to select a new Speaker to lead the House of Commons. Yesterday MPs voted to select Lindsay Hoyle as the new Speaker, so in this video we discuss the process of electing Hoyle to the Speaker’s chair.

For whatever reason, I just assumed that Lindsay Hoyle was a Conservative, until I watched this video. Because in New Zealand, the Speaker has almost without exception been from the governing party. How about that, I guess you learn something new every day.

Nearly all the Speaker candidates' speeches mentioned "impartiality"; a few mentioned subsuming their personalities or being quiet. Were they throwing shade at Bercow? The British language is so subtle.
