John Galliano’s Fall/Winter 1996 Haute Couture collection for Givenchy, presented in Paris, revisited the theme of the Incroyables and Merveilleuses—the flamboyant figures of France’s Directoire period whose dress challenged conventional fashion.

Drawing on late 18th-century silhouettes, the collection featured empire-waist gowns, transparent layers, and lingerie-inspired slip dresses that reinterpreted historical dress through a contemporary lens. Delicate fabrics, cascading ruffles, fine lace, and sheer textiles emphasized lightness and movement, while romantic draping and soft tailoring reflected Galliano’s fascination with historical costume.

The collection combined period-inspired references with Galliano’s signature bias-cut construction and fluid silhouettes, creating an ethereal wardrobe that blended neoclassical elegance with modern sensuality.
