The freedom of expression index has dropped 10% since 2012, governments have intensified media control by 48%, and self-censorship has increased by 63%, a scale of decline that recalls the dynamics registered in the lead-up to and during the two World Wars. And yet journalism remains one of the most powerful forces for building and sustaining peace, as documented in UNESCO’s World Trends Report on Freedom of Expression and Media Development, available at https://www.unesco.org/en/world-media-trends.

Drawing on independent research and statistical analysis, the report examines the pressures reshaping journalism today: violence and harassment, platform dominance, economic fragility, and AI-driven transformation. As reliable information becomes ever more critical amid crises, elections, and conflicts, this session brings together panellists with expertise across the report’s three major themes: journalist safety and press freedom, technology, and media viability. Together with the audience, they examine how the trends reshaping journalism as identified in the report are manifested in practice on the ground, and develop collective strategies to reaffirm journalism’s role as a cornerstone of democratic societies and peace.
