Constance Marten and Mark Gordon guilty of manslaughter over baby’s death | BBC News

Published

on

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon have been found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter over their baby’s death.

The couple went on the run in January 2023 and were brought to police attention after a placenta wrapped in a towel was found on the back seat of a burning car near Bolton in England.

The couple’s baby, Victoria, was found dead in a shopping bag in Brighton in 2023 after they spent two months trying to evade authorities.

Marten and Gordon were previously found guilty of concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice. The retrial, which concluded on Monday was on outstanding charges.

Chief prosecutor Jaswant Narwal said they “have shown little remorse for their actions, using different antics to frustrate and delay court proceedings”.

US President Donald Trump says US will hit Iran ‘hard’ again | BBC News

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has said the US will hit Iran “hard” on Wednesday, after the two sides exchanged strikes overnight.

“We hit them hard yesterday and we’re going to hit them hard again today,” he said, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office. He also reiterated a call for Iran to “sign a deal”.

Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian said in a post on X following Trump’s briefing that Iran “will stand firm against any pressure or threat”.

The US launched strikes on Iran on Tuesday after Trump said Iran had shot down a US Army helicopter.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it responded with strikes on US bases in the region.

The free speech dilemma over Hasan Piker | Top Comment Podcast

Published

on

When Twitch streamer Hasan Piker was denied entry into the UK this week, it rekindled a conversation around the Home Office’s approach to free speech. From Kanye West to Valentina Gomez, the list of prominent names who have seen their travel plans derailed in recent months is growing, with commentators across the political spectrum accusing the government of overreaching. Piker, whose highly critical stance on Israel has led to disputed allegations of antisemitism, says he is being targeted for his position on the war in Gaza.

On this episode, Matt and Marianna explain why many young people in particular are outraged by the decision, and consider whether some of his more inflammatory comments should be considered less extreme in the amplified environment of social media.

Top Comment is hosted by Marianna Spring and Matt Shea.
