COP29 $250bn climate cash offer criticised as ‘deeply disappointing’ by poorer countries | BBC News
The COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan has released a new draft finance deal that would have developed nations take the lead.
The deal proposes wealthier countries give $250bn (£199bn) per year by 2035 to developing nations to help tackle climate change.
But small island nations, including countries like Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu in the Pacific, and Barbados and Bermuda in the Caribbean, are “deeply disappointed” with the new cash offer, saying the proposed $250bn a year by 2030 is a cap that will “severely stagnate climate action efforts”.
Delegates in Baku have been trying to debate a new deal.

Trump: US has seized Iranian cargo ship on eve of peace talks | BBC News
The US has intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to get past its blockade of Iran’s ports, according to US President Donald Trump.
He said the ship was given “fair warning to stop” in the Gulf of Oman but refused, so the navy “stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room”.
Earlier it was confirmed that a US delegation led by the Vice President JD Vance will be In Pakistan for a new round of peace talks with Iran. However Iran has not confirmed that it will be participating in the talks.
Trump has again threatened to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges if they do not reach a deal with the US, including reopening the strait of Hormuz to international shipping.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lyse Doucet in Iran and Simi Jolaoso in Washington.
