New national lockdown across UK with schools and universities closed as Covid surges – BBC News

Published

on

Boris Johnson has announced that England is again entering a lockdown, to be enforced by law. England joins Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in implementing tougher new restrictions, faced with a surging number of new cases of coronavirus.

In a televised address from Downing Street the prime minister said he believed this was a pivotal moment in the fight against the pandemic and that the weeks ahead would be the hardest yet.

Mr Johnson said that people living in England should stay at home and only leave for exceptional reasons. People who are extremely clinically vulnerable are being asked to shield again.

All schools and universities in England will be closed until at least after the February half term. And most GCSE and A-level exams are not likely to go ahead in England this year.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg and education editor Branwen Jeffreys.

UK social media ban for under-16s EXPLAINED | BBC News

Published

on

Millions of children in the UK will be forced off social media after the government announced it would ban under-16s from accessing a range of platforms.

Apps including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram will become inaccessible for children, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said.

“We hope to pass regulation before Christmas,” he said, with the ban coming into force in spring 2027.

Tech companies including Meta, Snapchat and YouTube warned a blanket ban would move children into more unsafe online environments.

The government is yet to release the full list of platforms affected, but said YouTube, Facebook and X would also be included.

Trump says deal to end war with Iran already signed and details released ‘pretty soon’ | BBC News

Published

on

The deal to end the war has already been signed electronically by the US and Iran, and details of the Memorandum of Understanding will be released publicly in “24 to 48 hours”, a US official said.

US President Donald Trump said a formal signing ceremony, attended by Vice-President JD Vance, will happen in Switzerland on Friday.

Trump said the deal includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the end of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

A senior US official said that Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon is not part of the deal. A spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said ending the conflict in Lebanon is a pivotal part of the framework agreement Iran and the US reached.

Oil prices have fallen and shares risen after the US and Iran said they had agreed a framework deal to end the war.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, dropped more than 5% to $82.84 (£61.70) a barrel, while global stock markets rose.
