Ukrainian fightback against Russia gains ground west of Kyiv – BBC News
Ukrainian troops are counter-attacking Russian forces in some areas of the country, with reports that they have gained ground near the capital, Kyiv.
Local authorities in the town of Makariv, west of Kyiv, said Ukrainian flags were flying there once more.
A US defence spokesman said Ukrainians were also reversing momentum in some parts of the south.
In the small southern town of Voznesensk, Russian forces were pushed back and an armoured convoy destroyed.
And in Kherson, close to the Crimean peninsula and the first city to fall to Russia, Ukrainian forces are also trying to recapture territory.
However, the latest assessment from the UK Ministry of Defence says Russian troops in Ukraine are moving in from the north and south to “envelop Ukrainian forces in the east of the country”.
The note says “Russian forces are likely reorganising before resuming large-scale offensive operations”.

Today, the US and Iran have been exchanging strikes after hostiles were renewed in the Strait of Hormuz overnight.

Iran has launched fresh strikes on US targets today, following a second night of strikes between the two countries last night.
The fragile ceasefire between the two countries was ruptured earlier this week when the US accused Iran of targeting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military says it struck around 90 Iranian targets on Wednesday night, and more than 80 the night before.
Sirens sounded in Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Iraq as a result of the Iranian drone and missile strikes.
Meanwhile, the final day of public mourning for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has taken place while strikes have been exchanged. Huge crowds have gathered for his burial this evening.
