JFK assassination: Kennedy’s mother Rose’s ‘agony’ after loss of her son, 60 years ago – BBC News

Published

on

To mark the 60th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s death, revisit two exclusive BBC interviews with the US president’s mother, Rose, who movingly details the family’s intense pride and sorrow.

The profound loss Rose felt at her son John’s death would be reflected by the shock and grief that would play out across the US, to the extent that a whole generation would be able to remember exactly where they were when they heard that he had been shot.

When JFK’s life was cut short so shockingly, it sparked a wave of grief and mourning that left an indelible mark on the consciousness of the nation.

Air Force One tapes on Nov 22 1963 reveal a telephone call the new President made to JFK's mother. The connection was bad with loud static and buzzing sounds. Mrs Rose Kennedy kept saying 'Hello Hello'. Once LBJ got connected and uttered 'Hello Mrs. Kennedy', that amazing courageous old woman replied 'Yes? Yes Mr. President?' ~ I was so moved with tears by her response

Living until the age of 105, burying her children with one of the them having his brain blown off in-front of the nation was definitely a hard thing bear.

She was no stronger than many women who buried children. My sis-in-law buried all three of her children. My dads first cousin buried three of her children. Rose didn’t raise her children, her nanny/ governess did.

Rose and Teddy were very close, they had real similarities, for instance in their strong faith, in their need to always see the bright side of the life, no matter what, they had to endure the loss of Joe Jr who was Teddy godfather, Jack and Bobby, and yet they could always have a laugh and sing songs with the family, while Rose played the piano, their faith seemed to be a key element.

I'm watching JFK's mother speak for the first time. I truly felt the woman's pain deep in my heart, from miles away. It's really not easy at all. It is a very painful experience for a mother to see her son, of whom she was proud of his achievements, die in this way. Imagine, your son became the president of the USA. He is young and happily married. However, in front of the eyes of the whole world, he is brutally murdered as a result of an unknown assassination attempt. Moreover, the real perpetrators can never be identified, tried and punished. There's really no explanation for this. This scandal is happening in one of the most modern countries in the world.

Her grief is so obvious. She did what she had to do through her religious convictions. She was brought up in politics, so she was perfect to marry Joe Kennedy. Kennedy did what he wanted to do and kept things from her. He ran a tight ship and was ruthless. Rose prayed and prayed yet could not undo damage . Rest in peace dear lady .

Absolutely such a lovely mother Rose Kennedy🌹❤
Truly hits home when she spoke of 'Jack' being here, rather than ever being a President…heartbreaking. She made sure her children grew up healthy as could be, well mannered, educated and truly honorable young ppl. Sad that fate took it away. And for President Kennedy's situation, a murder from the highest element of powers that be in America and Europe too. Rose was not lying when she said JFK would do the most honorable and truest mind for all ppl in life. Nevermind his personal life due to medical etc. JFK was a good true man. And today, I'm saying what a shame he didn't crush and scatter some secret societies, "to the wind" as it's a pivotal time in history when the power of a not so secret cia had completely transfered and cemented their place in Government, where they absolutely have no place. Rest Easy Kennedy family..❤🙏🏻🙏🏻

Airstrikes hit Kuwait airport – 1 dead and 60 injured – Iran and US launch more attacks | BBC News

Published

on

One person has been killed and more than 60 injured in strikes on Kuwait’s international airport.

Kuwait’s defence ministry spokesman blamed Iran, saying drones had attacked the airport, and called it “criminal Iranian aggression”.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) denied responsibility for the attacks, claiming the damage was caused by an error from a US missile interceptor.

US Central Command said this was false and also accused Iran in targeting the airport in what it called a “deliberate, calculated and unjustified attack”.

The IRGC said it had targeted US bases in the Gulf in retaliation for US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker and Qeshm Island.

The US said it had launched “self-defence” strikes on Iran, and shot down or intercepted Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Caroline Hawley.

US and Iran launch new strikes, as Kuwait says airport hit by Iranian drones | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it launched “self-defence” strikes on Iran overnight, and shot down ballistic missiles and drones fired at ships and Gulf countries.

The strikes on Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, were “in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East”, US Central Command (Centcom) said.

Iran said it had attacked US bases and helicopters in a “regional country” using missiles and drones in retaliation. Centcom said Tehran fired two missiles at Kuwait and three at Bahrain, all of which broke apart or were intercepted.

Kuwait’s army later said Iranian drones had hit its international airport, causing “significant” building damage and injuries to a number of people.

The latest attacks come amid stalled ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran, after talks on a deal to end the months-long war failed to advance over the weekend.

How big a threat is Iran’s military now? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

The US and Iran have traded strikes, as negotiations to extend their ceasefire drag on without a resolution. On Monday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted an air base used by US forces. It also threatened to open “new fronts” in the conflict, and keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, in response to Israel’s offensive in Lebanon.

So how great a threat does Iran’s military pose to the US and its allies, after more than three months of war?

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Iran’s forces have been “decimated”. But new analysis by the BBC has found that Iran has damaged at least 20 US military sites across the Middle East since the start of the war – suggesting the attacks are more extensive than publicly acknowledged. Using cheap drones, Iran has targeted American military equipment worth millions of dollars including THAAD batteries.

Iranian forces have also reportedly reopened several missile sites damaged early in the conflict.

We ask Merlyn Thomas from BBC Verify and Parham Ghobadi from BBC Persian about Iran’s military capacity and what it means for the chances of a deal between Washington and Tehran.
