Ukraine war leaves Mariupol at risk of major cholera outbreak – BBC News
The UK defence ministry has said that the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which is now under Russian control, is at risk of a major cholera outbreak.
Water in the city has mixed with sewage after weeks of heavy shelling that left infrastructure damaged or destroyed in the city, where an estimated 100,000 people are still living.
One resident who fled Mariupol a week ago described it as a “city of corpses”, with uncollected dead bodies and rubbish adding to the unsanitary conditions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he expects the war with Russia to continue into the winter, following talks with Donald Trump’s top envoys in Kyiv.
The discussions finished without an announcement of a major breakthrough, after Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Ukraine for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion. The previous day, the pair had held talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Witkoff said he was “encouraged” by what he called “substantive” and important talks in Kyiv. Zelensky stressed that he wanted a just peace with no opportunity for renewed aggression by Russia.

Two US envoys are hoping for “equally productive meetings” in Ukraine after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on ending the war, US officials say.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to land in Kyiv on Sunday, the first trip by US President Donald Trump’s top negotiators to Ukraine’s capital.
They discussed “substantive plans for next steps” with Putin on Saturday according to the White House, and an announcement is expected in the coming weeks, as efforts to end the war in Ukraine gather pace.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready for “a substantive conversation” as Witkoff and Kushner were negotiating at the Kremlin, with talks lasting three hours in Putin’s official residence on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump said the United States has carried out a new wave of strikes on Iran, in response to attempted Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and against US service personnel stationed in the Middle East.
Ahead of the strikes, the Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had said his country was willing to return to the conditions of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the US and Iran in June.
Those comments came as Pezeshkian met with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan. The Iranian president told his Russian counterpart that together their two countries could resist what he called “US unilateralism”.

Prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner Joshua Wong has pleaded guilty to collusion with foreign entities, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison under Beijing’s sweeping National Security Law (NSL).
The 29-year-old, who has become the poster child for political activism in Hong Kong, is already serving a sentence of four years and eight months after being convicted of subversion – another NSL violation – in late 2024.
The court said Wong would be sentenced at a later date. His earlier jail term is due to end early next year.
Wong was at the forefront of the Umbrella Movement in 2014 and massive pro-democracy protests in 2019.
The latest charge accuses Wong of conspiring with other campaigners, including exiled activist Nathan Law, to ask foreign countries and entities outside China to impose sanctions or blockades against Beijing.

BBC making up news, there is no cholera, no recent reported cases of cholera (though they have a previous history of cholera dating back years) and all test results have been negative for cholera.
BBC should also report on how Mariupol could also be at risk of an alien invasion, volcanic eruptions and tornadoes…

I do not understand why Ukraine is delaying the process of reconciliation with Russia, refusing to negotiate and mobilizing already elderly people unfit for military service? After all, there are more victims every day! Apparently, Zelensky and his team keep hoping that NATO countries will go to war with Russia themselves. But we have already damaged our economy because of Ukraine, and now we have to die for it? Why?
