Jailed HK activist Joshua Wong pleads guilty to foreign collusion | BBC News

Published

on

Prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner Joshua Wong has pleaded guilty to collusion with foreign entities, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison under Beijing’s sweeping National Security Law (NSL).

The 29-year-old, who has become the poster child for political activism in Hong Kong, is already serving a sentence of four years and eight months after being convicted of subversion – another NSL violation – in late 2024.

The court said Wong would be sentenced at a later date. His earlier jail term is due to end early next year.

Wong was at the forefront of the Umbrella Movement in 2014 and massive pro-democracy protests in 2019.

The latest charge accuses Wong of conspiring with other campaigners, including exiled activist Nathan Law, to ask foreign countries and entities outside China to impose sanctions or blockades against Beijing.

Ebola: Everything you need to know about the outbreak | The Global Story

Published

on

The public health risk from the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been increased from “high” to “very high” by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In an update on Friday 22 May, the WHO’s head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said the risk in the wider region in Africa was “high”, but it remained “low” at a global level.

There are different strains of Ebola; the current strain identified in Democratic Republic of Congo is caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

The WHO says there are no approved drugs or vaccines for the strain of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

Asma Khalid speaks to the BBC’s Health and Science correspondent, James Gallagher, about the outbreak. She asks: what is Ebola, what are the symptoms, how does it spread, where does it come from and whether there a cure, vaccine or treatment.

Police crack down on India ‘cockroach’ protest in Delhi | BBC News

Published

on

Tens of thousands of security personnel have been deployed and roads barricaded in Delhi to stop the latest Cockroach Janta Party demonstration.

The group says its leader, Abhijeet Dipke, is among hundreds who have been reportedly detained since Friday evening.

Dipke – who has said he is prepared to go to jail – started the movement in May almost as a joke in response to a remark by India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant, who had likened jobless youngsters to “cockroaches”.

Trump: ceasefire is “on life support” and Iran peace plan is “garbage” | BBC News

Published

on

President Trump has said the month-long ceasefire between the US and Iran is on “massive life support”. He described Iran’s response to US proposals to end the war as “garbage” and “totally unacceptable”, telling reporters: “That piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it,”

Iran laid out its demands to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a counter-offer sent to the US on Sunday. Esmail Baghaei, a foreign ministry spokesperson for Iran, responded to Trump’s comments, saying Tehran’s proposals were “responsible” and “generous”.

Tehran’s offer includes an immediate end to the war on all fronts – a reference to the continued Israeli attacks against Iran-supported Hezbollah in Lebanon – a halt to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and guarantees of no further attacks on Iran, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency. It also reportedly includes a demand for compensation for war damage and an emphasis on Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

The US president said Iran’s leaders were “very dishonourable people”, adding: “Look, I’ve had to deal with them four or five times – they change their mind.” He also accused Iran of going back on an agreement to allow the US to remove its supply of enriched uranium and insisted that Iran would never have a nuclear weapon.
