Kevin McCarthy: Who will replace him as House Speaker? – BBC News
A search is under way for a Speaker of the House of Representatives after Republican Kevin McCarthy was unexpectedly pushed out by a right-wing revolt in his own party.
The Republicans control the lower chamber of Congress but with a very narrow majority.
So when eight rebels joined the Democrats on Tuesday night, his fate was sealed in a 216-210 final vote.
It is the first time a House Speaker, one of the top jobs in US politics, has been removed in this way.

Israel has said it supports suspending strikes on Iran, but added the two-week ceasefire “does not include Lebanon”.
A statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel “supports President Trump’s decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region”.
It then said: “The two-weeks ceasefire does not include Lebanon”.
Iran and Pakistanâs Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who helped negotiate the ceasefire, both have said the deal covers Lebanon, where Israel has been fighting the Iranian proxy Hezbollah.
US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, if shipping is allowed to move through the Strait of Hormuz.

When Donald Trump was President he took Obama Care away claiming it was excluding white people just those able to afford medical bills.
