Document leak reveals nations lobbying to change key climate report – BBC News

Published

on

A huge leak of documents seen by BBC News shows how countries are trying to change a crucial scientific report on how to tackle climate change.

The leak reveals some countries – including Saudi Arabia, Japan and Australia – are asking the UN to play down the need to move rapidly away from fossil fuels.

It also shows some wealthy nations are questioning paying more to poorer states to move to greener technologies.

This “lobbying” raises questions for the key COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, which starts on 31 October.

I understand India's position. It won't help them because climate change is progressing but I get it. Americans, Europeans and wealthy countries have abused the environment for several centuries and now that we're in a crisis they caused, they want India to stop their progress to pay for the crimes of wealthy countries who didn't practice what they now preach in order to achieve their current wealth. It's a tough one but we will all be wiped out equally. Oh well 🤷‍♀️😂

After everything that's happened over the last couple of years, and in light of everything that turned out to be untrue, this science they talk about seems very questionable, very very questionable.

They never show the harshest winters in living memory though , just highlight floods in cities etc , pretty obvious when towns expand and cities that the water has no where to go and the streets act as natural channels , plus most of this is multi media reportage these events where 10 fold worse in the past only they were not recorded

Fracking, Natural Gas, decreased US CO2 output more than any nation on earth. If CO2 mattered we would have everyone on Nuclear by now with 1/300th the land use and a 30th the resources.

As a Brazilian, our government doesn't care about climate change, it's all about fast money. It's common knowledge that meat production causes several of our problems. We have all the means to change our economic system to a more sustainable one, and one that at the same time cares more about the wellbeing of the population. But our government doesn't care.

I believe that all this "man made" climate change is 24k pure shite. There is climate change. It's called weather. There have been cycles for eons. In the 70's they were telling us there is a soon coming ice age. We were told in the 90's there were several reports that our way of life would end in 2010, 2015, 2020…………

Yes, we absolutely need to be good stewards of our planet. Green energy would be a good thing. But this winging on about we're destroying the planet…… A good sized volcano erupting spews more greenhouse gasses than all mankind in a year!!

Obviously the climate is ramping up, the warmer it gets the more energy can go into storms, so more rain will fall, so start moving to places that are geologically stable and high enough elevation you and yours will not drown or float away.

Capitalism’s biggest weakness shows – countries protecting their economic interests by attempting to manipulate the narrative. Fossil fuel companies lied about the impact of carbon emissions for decades, this is no surprise. They don’t care about the people they govern, only their money.

I understand why Australia is against the Coal one and the paying poorer countries because with the government doesn’t want to start losing money and the collapse economy as Australia is relying on its coal export to almost keep the economy stable while also trying to slowing leaning off it and the reason why the government might not want to pay the poorer countries is because they don’t want to become another uk and it is the only country that is slowly paying off it debts , well that is my two bits

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.

The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
