The US city of Pittsburgh claims to have more bridges than any other place in the world – and don’t try telling locals otherwise.
There are 446 of them, to be precise. The best known of those bridges span the two rivers, the Monongahela and Allegheny, which flow through Pennsylvania and meet in the old steel city to form the Ohio River.

A very acomplished engineer in the Pittsburgh area once told me how many bridges are in Pittsburgh, for Foot Traffic, Driving, Trains, and even on Private Property. It is VERY numerous because the land is rugged and the terrain is steep and jagged.
The city of Pittsburgh is quite small inside of Allegheny country. If you look at a map, the yellow or white area showing the metro area is many times larger than the city borders because the region is a collection of smaller cities & boroughs packed tightly together. While the county has about 2 million people, the city is about 300k. The bridges in Allegheny couty which would be included in a city in another state or country, would be north of 5k counting ALL bridges according the the engineers. Because in the Pittsburgh numbers they do not count railroad bridges, foot bridges and any bridge that is not at least 8 feet long and passable by an automobile. The terrain there is very rugged.

PGHbridges.com said concerning this… Pittsburgh has 30 river bridges with an additional 29 river bridges within Allegheny County for a total of 59. Then you may start to add the many others which cross streams, ravines, roads, railroads, etc. The typically cited figure of over 2,000 in Allegheny County apparently doesn't include railroad bridges owned by the railroads, and only includes those over 8 feet in length.

As I say in my website introduction: "Other locations may have greater relief, but they are not as heavily urbanized; other cities may be more densely built, but they will tend to be on gentler terrain."

Lonely Planet (travel guide) states: "Venice is built on 117 small islands and has some 150 canals and 409 bridges (only three of which cross the Grand Canal)." [They're building a fourth bridge in 2004.]

Pittsburgh easily beats 409. And 4.

The Association for Bridge Design and Construction (ABCD) only counts the non-railroad bridges over 20 feet in length and Pittsburgh still comes out on top.

Other contenders? Maybe New York City.

And Pittsburgh has no moveable bridges…unlike Chicago.

I grew up in a town outside of Pittsburgh called “Ambridge,” named after the American Bridge Company and built to house its workers.

I was a kid in Pitt and we went to the point to fish. During the winter when the steel mills were still operating they dumped into the Monongahela River and it didn't freeze as a result. So the Allegheny would be frozen up to 'the point' where it met the Monongahela and then the Ohio was not frozen past that point. I also remember the entire sky would be orange during some days from the steel mills. That was certainly a steel town. Almost all my relatives worked there. Chipped ham, gumbands, and the Steelers.

Amsterdam has 1,200 bridges. So claiming you have the most bridges of any city in the world is laughable. But understandable for Americans because you think you are the best the biggest etc etc etc. The world ends at your borders 😂🤣🙃🥲😂😅

I’m a native suburban Pittsburgher myself, and while I certainly *do* enjoy the views of the bridges just as any other Pittsburgher, I honestly wouldn’t mind a little paintwork to fix those old rusty spots on the bridges in order to encourage further tourism to the city.

There is a book I own called "The Book of Cities" by Philip Dodd and Ben Donald. In its coverage of Pittsburgh, they quoted Brendan Gill of The New Yorker who said: "If Pittsburgh were situated somewhere in the heart of Europe, tourists would eagerly journey hundreds of miles out of their way to visit it."

After seeing Pittsburgh's beauty and charm this past summer when my family went on vacation there, I can understand how Gill arrived at such a feeling. IMO, its picturesque quality matches that of actual European cities (Prague and Cologne come to mind).

John Cigna the late, great KDKA radio legend, once said painting Pittsburgh's bridges different colors would make the bridges picture worthy especially the golden triangle bridges when viewed from Mt. Washington. I really like that idea and it would make great post cards.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
