Theresa May’s Chequers Deal – Brexit Explained

Published

on

UPDATE: Around the time of this video’s release the EU rejected the Chequers Plan we discuss in the video. We found out hours before the release of the video, once the video was already queued and scheduled. We had been working on the video for quite some time so it seemed a shame not to post it regardless of recent news. We still think that it’s relevant to know what May’s plan is/was as it will likely form the basis of future negotiations. As mentioned in the video they simply don’t have time to reformulate a whole new plan, so if a deal is reached it will likely be a tweaked version of this proposal.

The UK government is currently in the process of negotiating with the European Union. Prime Minister Theresa May has put forward a proposal, the Chequers Deal, and she’s hoping that it will work. The problem is it needs to be accepted by the EU and her own parliament in the UK. So what is the deal, and will it work?

I'm from uk, the reason why people voted out is all the people coming to live here, most people hate all the polish outnumbering the English in schools. (90% polish ). And for taking jobs. I disagree with mays plan she is taking all the good bits and taking out the bad. If people were bothers to vote we would have stayed in only 25% of the population vote out.

Much more serious is May undermining democracy with her threats to crack down on freedom of expression. Already we have ASBO and hate speech drivel brought in by the super-ponce euro arse- licker Blair. If freedom of speech is not restored Brexit is academic.

this plan is a cherry picking plan. You want kind of a single market, but you get special treatment while all others keep the same rules.

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

You know, that the UK always had control over migration except for single market members. You weren't even part of Schengen.

Fundamentally to foundation of the leave vote, was to leave for good or bad bottom line is a complete break. The complete break needs to happen before any progress can be made, any compromise on this just simply is not what the uk majority voted for.

I do love how the EU admits that the UK is 'Picking the best bits' without the negatives – Its essentially admitting there is fundamental flaws within the EU that are ever increasingly more unpopular within Europe, yet are coerced upon the nation states by the simple fact that the EU has a monopoly on European trade, and any one willing to risk truly challenging said hegemony risks significant economic damage in the short term as its economy re-adjusts to the effects of either Leaving the EU or the punitive EU measures put against it for daring to challenge there authority, like the case in Poland and Hungary.

Nice video! Keep doing it! IMHO, hard Brexit is the only option, at the moment our GOV is wasting time with unelected and corrupted EU eurocrats. EU is failing Super State in which there are 24 countries-parasites and only 4 paying money for the rest. You don't need to be a genius to predict the result. Our GOV should try to secure exclusive deals with USA, Japan, China and other G20 countries instead!!!

great video, i finally understood the UK position. On a personal note it makes no sense, EU should never allow such type of a deal, you guys want out, so be it. You can't pick and choose what you like from the EU. Besides the UK never supported the EU ideal, no Shengen, no euro, not even the god damn license plates, etc… i say just have the courage to leave already. Now i was really needing the other video about the EU part of the deal, i guess i'll have to wait.

  13. @xyungeloest

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

3:50 So this deal is basicly cherry picking! They keep the good things from the EU but also do their own and dont pay the fee to the eu. And who is asking why the Eu doesnt approve to that xD?

I voted remain and would tomorrow. Not thinking it's perfect but simply on this is the best Europe we've had since the Romans.
Could the EU posters accusing the UK of being solely responsible for this mess explain how Junkers obtained his powers as President, and more importantly, how you could get rid of him, if it were the will of the EU citizens? I genuinely would like to know. Although accountable to the European Parliament it seems more Feudal than Democracy. The Commission seems to be able to do what it likes. At the last election 43% on EU citizens exercised their vote. Why does the European parliament travel between Brussels & Strasbourg every 3 weeks?

10 minutes to explain it? i can do it in 6 rows:
Theresa May "hey i have a plan for brexit, we want all the pros of the single market but you can keep your people, i call it Chequers "
EU "can't work, people and goods come togheter, come back with something better"
6 months later, EU: "so what do you have for us?"
Theresa may "same plan as before, what about it?"
    EU: "nope"
Theresa May: "i've been ambushed, i demand respect!"

  25. @marmyte

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

Not much point in a soft Brexit. May as well stay in rather than that!!
But off course there’s the Canadian style Brexit deal to consider too for uk.

  26. @walterbunn280

As someone who lives in the USA, I can see why this didn't pass.
Also as a person who lives in the USA, I think it's sufficient to say "The UK is dead, and we're watching it's death spasms.".
The UK is paralyzed. Scotland was prepared to walk out of the UK even before Brexit, but now that the UK is leaving the EU, I don't see how the UK as a whole will persist.

  27. @charlestownsend9280

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

Does anyone actually want to trade with America or china, one has so few regulations that most of their food, drinks and other products contains harmful chemicals, not to mention that due to their political leanings at the moment it will likely be a very one sided deal and the other is a running joke about how cheap the stuff is that they break after five minutes and we already have a deal with them that allows for goods to come in with little to no fee, why do we want to trade with either of them? Also the idea that they'd want to trade with one country compared to a block of countries all offering the same products would be laughable if it wasn't so depressing.

  28. @charlestownsend9280

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

The logical deal would be a soft brexit with the ability to create new trade deals of their own but allows for trade (so we won't spend years with no trade deals) and movement to continue (because we actually need immigration to support certain areas like farming, nursing, care work, etc) and for there to be no borders (so Ireland is happy and we don't start yet another conflict with them and undo decades of peace talks). The plan that May somehow thinks would have worked is so contradictory and to compromising that it just doesn't work, she needs to take a side (preferably not the hard brexit nut jobs). It's no surprise that the EU dismissed it because it's not a good proposal and May is deluded to think that it was.

  29. @isaotogashi7415

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

The best that could happen to EU at this point is UK punching themselves in the negotiations ending up with no deal hard Brexit. That would lead to sudden economy drop, bad foreign trade deals (because of much weaker position than before), ultimately to the loss of Tories and disappearance of Brexit propagators, such as Johnson or Farage. And then Labour could try to rejoin EU some time later, but on actually fair grounds (UK has had a huge amount of special treatment in the EU, throwing it all away just now).

I just heard May may call a snap election, It shows her weakness, The party needs to be rid of MAY and Boris to be leader , Labour could get in by default and may stop Brexit or have a 2nd referendum on Brexit, to me thats cheating, the UK people have spoken in or out, The rich and powerful are doing every dirty trick in the book to stop Brexit, this will be the biggest betrayal to the people of the UK

  48. @TF-qd8ru

    January 17, 2024 at 11:35 am

"allowing them to limit to flow of goods and people" I'm not sure "limit" was the right word to use there. Without free movement, would it be more likely for the cap on skilled migrants from outside the EU to be lifted? When outside of the EU, the goal of achieving more free trade, not less – is that not a "limit" being lifted by not being in EU?
