We have a bread machine, but rarely use it. I'd rather make bread by hand; I enjoy the process and just freeze the extra loaves/rolls.

Having an electric oven that automatically turns on at night to burn your house down while you are sleeping doesn't seem very safe. Also, like all British bread the end result looks completely inedible.

Chef's don't bake bread, though. Baker's bake bread. Chef's construct whole menus, write up recipies, and generally arrange the day to day oversite of a whole kitchen. Easy to do at home, just gotta over see yourself, and boom.. chef. But bakers are not chefs.

Chef's can be bakers, but typically you will call yourself a baker when talking about how awesome your baked goods are. Since, like, baking and chef-ing are very different things.

I admit I used bread machines but got rid of them. For me it was about reducing the amount of gadgets I have. My bread machines did a lot of things but if you don't do those things then it's not worth it. I don't make yogurt and frankly if I'm making strawberry jam I'm doing it in a canning kitchen and going through 42 pounds of strawberries at a time. I gave them all away and used my stand mixer. The attachements are far more usable for me than the bread machines. I think it's about your lifestyle and what works for you.

Handmade bread > Machine bread. Bread machines are making scratch bread baking a lost skill among home chefs. Tragic.

Newer viewer (from the mythical kitchen collab) binge watching old episodes between school, work and the new uploads – 17 seconds in to this one and I'm glad I had not yet taken a sip of the drink I have beside me, or that the boys had drinks in their hands… I do love me the benuendos and the straightlaced delivery with that intro setup was gold! The boys should have known Ebbers was going to run with it.

That was a well-presented video – covered many options in a short period of time, but quite thorough on each. Very well done. Thank you for putting this together and sharing.

I've thought of a bread machine before, but the machine my sister had made really blah breads. I guess it's one of those "what you pay for" options.

Got a Breville one for our wedding about 20 years ago and still going strong. Love it. Usually buy the pre-portioned packs from supermarket (each about 1/2 the price of buying a decent loaf), but play with them a bit too. Add a decent serrated bread knife and its awesome.

My Sunbeam does 8, & I use it as i1 have terrible arthritis in my hands & cannot knead. The bread holder is the same after all these years. Never changed. What I like is everything goes in order, with a well made in the flour mound & yeast goes there. I made a turkey breast with rosemary & a fresh herb (from my garden) bread to make sandwiches..I make my dough in it for other items.

  23. @skyes7369

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

There’s not a chance I could make dough by hand anymore because my hands just don’t work like they used to. Even a flour/egg/oil pasta dough is out of the question these days & I never even thought about using the bread maker to do the kneading for me so I’ll be having a crack tomorrow.

You also should have mentioned that a preferment will make homemade bread last longer. I wonder if a fancy machine like that can implement preferment.

  27. @SashaBurgess1933

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

You forgot to mention that the bread needs to fully cool before slicing or you will lose flavor.

We have got an older model of this and used it for almost 10 years. I do artisan bread as well but for a quick daily bread or pizza dough f eg it's really good.

LOVE this web series, the people, teamwork and friendship make it work for me! Heads up to American watchers, the model shown in this video and its replacement (the sd-yr2550) are UK models and will not work in the US out of the box, You need a step up/step down transformer( from 230 V – 240 V 50 Hz to 110V @60Hz) and Panasonc will not go on record and says it's supported…and that's not the only difference you should know about.

I called it out because I was already to buy this Pansonic one and noticed some slight differences in the casing and naming, so I thought it couldn't be that different, but upon further research, the US model (SD-R2550) has significantly fewer settings (31 vs. 20)… bummer.

Japan even has a few models higher than these but ONLY are available there (buttons are in Japanese and the manual has no translated versions) so at the time of this post to get it shipped to the USA, add a step up/step down transformer and HOPE it works, I was already at a high-end Zojirushi ($400 US) so I went that way (I'm not good at supporting a company sticks us with such an inferior model, sorry Panasonic).

Anyways, great demo guys, Keep up the good work!

  31. @manymoms920

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

I bought a previous version of this model. Was the most expensive gadget id bought at the time. Think i worked out id break even cost wise with savings made within less than 12 months. That was years ago. Since then we have used the machine every day ir every other day since. I just use the basic bread or its various types. Im tempted to try the latest model and go for the ferment enriched breads. Never done jam, but my friends have with same midel and ut turned out very nice

  32. @bobbigrant9158

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

This works well. I have searched the web for recipes https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxEf52Yn9PpTLKua_uvi5Ams4pIDINER52 There are a few in the pamphlet, but I am ready to explore. NOTE: Once you hit start, don’t mess with it or the dough will not rise. Learned that the hard way.

  33. @Luna.3.3.3

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

Well, it appears bread makers have had quite a few changes since I had one about 20 years ago. I like this model you tested but it's too pricey ( approx. $420 CAD 🇨🇦) for me to justify it for just two of us now. And I've had lots of practice making my own during Covid. I love the heavy rye bread, which I'm not great at, but couldn't buy it just for that. If there were 4 or more I was cooking for, I'd consider it.
    Thanks for the excellent testing.

  34. @TheMadeofhonor

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

People who work full time don't want to go home and make bread. It's a process. I think it's a huge convenience especially if you have several or more people to feed. I would rather make my own bread than buy from the stores. You don't know what's in that stuff.

  35. @donettmurphy420

When I had one, you could also make Jam

  39. @douglasue8226

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

I must say I love scratch bread making but not at 4 AM. I want a bread maker for the weekends at my country home so I don’t have to drive to get fresh bread. The amount of breads you made are impressive! Thank you so much for this demonstration!!!!

  40. @Kennethk67

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

All this and they still don’t got a rice cooker 😂

  41. @SeanReillyEsq

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

Thanks lads – watched your video about nine months ago and managed to find someone selling one in almost brand new condition on eBay for £80. Since then my family of four has had 2 fresh loaves a week. Very happy family!

  42. @carlr2837

    January 15, 2024 at 5:31 am

I have a ~25 year old Panasonic bread machine. It still works, and always produces a good loaf. I don't eat that much bread, so I don't use it that often, however. Clearly, they have made a lot of improvements to it over the years, and the new one bakes a better shaped loaf, and is more versatile, with more dispensers. I'm sure that the new one is still well made, and will last a long time, too.

I have made so many different breads in the old age home. The only problem is, I am yet to have a loaf for me. They all love the bread is gets polished off in one sitting.😂😂😂

Which one was that golden colored loaf?

Who needs a proving oven when you've got an old gas range and the top of the stove is the perfect bread proving temperature when the oven is preheating
