Festive spices like nutmeg and brandy.

The pudding price isn't that outrageous. A quick calculation of ingredients for my pudding, and I'm at around $Au 70. That doesn't count power costs in prep and cooking, or time involved, or the pudding bowl for that matter.

OMG, am I actually making a pretentious pudding???

The only problem with the coal your kids might be purposely naughty so they can get coal in their stockings!

Honeycomb is my favorite Australian candy (a friend in Australia sent me some). I'd never had it before, and I REALLY like it!

  5. @judithb6623

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

how is "oooh, this is my fortnum and mason coal" not pretentious, Ben? (also if you were to give it to naughty children, very mixed messages sent there :D)

I now buy the cinder toffee every year and considering the cost of living crisis we have been in, I’m surprised they have only gone up £1 in over 3 years

  7. @lisaflower5994

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Oh it’s a dark chocolate violet crumble! Looks delicious!

  8. @davetarpley3740

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Took me a moment to recognize cinder toffee as honeycomb. My mom used to love it, as did us kids. It's too sweet for us these days but dark chocolate certainly helps.

Weirdly, Kit-Kat came out with a honeycomb variety that did taste of honeycomb. Milk chocolate did not temper the sweetness though.

That coal honeycomb looks very high quality, extra fluffy and it seems to have been carmelized to a darker stage. (So-called burnt carmel can be delicious.)

James can’t be pretentious because of champagne truffles because they were a gift from his Gran. Any gift from a loving grandma can only ever be perfect

  10. @ethancampbell215

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Is it genuinely possible for a festively commercialised ingredient to be pretentious 😂😂 with the shelves being flooded with pretentiously marketed ingredients at Christmas it should be determined whether all or none of the seasonally released ingredients are pretentious

  11. @stephenshanebeaty

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Why are you calling something that looks like a bunt cake a pudding? Pudding should have the texture of sour cream.

  12. @koelekahuna9370

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Having never tried a Christmas pudding I bought the Magnificent plum pudding and thought it was very good. Difficult to consume for less than 8 people, but it does keep. I immediately ordered the coal and it is now a Christmas staple in my home.

See, I don't feel like any of these holiday items belong on a pretentious episode, because they are all centered around what for many is the largest celebration of the year. They're special occasion items. And many, if not most, find that on the holiday, you purchase the best you can afford to celebrate with those you love. Does that shout heavily to consumerism? Oh of course. But that is the nature of the holiday and the world that we live in. I don't find any of these pretentious.

I’m with Ben on the coal not being pretentious- to me- pretentious is when you take an item and put something in it on it, that serves no actual purpose other than to make it look better and cost more- the coal is only that tasty and interesting because of each of its components- each component serves an actually purpose and isn’t just there for looks- so if it was coated in say, activated charcoal powder, I MIGHT consider it pretentious!- as the powder would serve no other purpose than to make it look cool!?🤷‍♀️

  19. @sylvieseguin9057

Barry definition of Pretentious is VERY deferent then mine LOL. That Eggnog truffles, cinder toffee is so NOT Pretentious.

Clicked on this thinking that it was Sunday's episode, and that James was back to do a Christmas episode… Then I saw the upload date, and now I'm sad.

  21. @rationalbacon5872

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Oh man I love plum pudding, but since it's only available at Christmas where it's boiling hot weather here in Australia, I wish I could one day experience it on a cold evening instead of sweating and trying to stop the slapped mosquito's falling into the custard.

  22. @lyndacrossley9548

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

The Christmas pudding looks great, but…. I too was disappointed to hear it does not taste as good as it looks.

  23. @MichaelJohnson-vi6eh

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

American here. We dont really do Christmas pudding here. We have apple cider with orange and cloves and cinnamon and nutmeg to give us that CHRISTMAS spice thing. We have fruitcake sometimes but its rather awful. There are just SO MANY DAMN COOKIES!!!! After a while you just dont want any desserts anymore. I am from a huge family and small house so Christmas for us was always glazed ham sandwiches and mac and cheese and cole slaw – stuff you could eat on a plate on your lap because there was not enough room at the table. Love your channel.

  24. @huggledemon32

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Sooooxthe Xmas “coal” is basically an upmarket “crunchie” with lemon sherbet on the outside!?🤬😂🤷‍♀️👍🏻 (I had to google what “cinder toffee” is)

  25. @TheKernowKids

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

My great grandmother said a glass of sherry a day is the secret to a long life. She lived until she was 104!

  26. @maryjoyspohrer256

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Yes, the pudding is pretentious, but when you factor in the reusable ceramic bowl, along with the lovely message at the bottom, perhaps you can rationalize the purchase a bit better. Chances are you can find a similar recipe that you can use in that same bowl for years to come.

  27. @maryjoyspohrer256

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Man, are my tastes expensive. A half bottle of Icewine that I like is $35. US. At least is was about 30 or so years ago when we priced some.

How about review of various meal delivery services (hello fresh, blue apron, daily harvest)?

  29. @LiamHagan

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

I'm from New Zealand – if I ever make it to London, I'll bring Barry all the Manuka honey he wants. It will probably get seized at customs, but it will be the thought that counts.

  30. @Luckmann

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

15:57 Come on, now. The tin might say 8 people, but there's no way it serves more than 4, 5 tops.

  31. @sherryb2020

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

I’m feeling victimized. Ben doesn’t like me and Barry called me old. My feelings are hurt.

  32. @irishwristwatch2487

Isnt using Fortnum & Masons for these vids cheating a bit? Its the most pretentious shop in existence lmao

Here I am confined to my bed ,missing all the fa de la of Christmas. As a foodie I love this and I wish I were there. Please, all of you celebrate , and remember to share your joy with a shut- in..we will appreciate it more than I you will ever know..I hope.. XOX

  37. @JohnBainbridge0

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

You can't tell me that something called "Noe Vinum Optimum Rare Signature Pedro Ximenez Jerez" isn't pretentious.
I don't care how good it is, no product needs 3 names, 4 adjectives, and a noun. Especially when 3 of the adjectives are synonyms for "Special."
"Not pretentious," my Optimum Rare Signature Ass!

  38. @MelissaThompson432

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Looks like Chef James ended up with a bit of a wine flush by the end of the episode….

I really enjoyed this. I had no idea, but I seem to have expensive habits. I've paid more for special occasion treats, without question, and mostly without flinching….

  39. @ShellyS2060

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

OK, but, with the pudding you get a ceramic bowl… so I get the price point.
Mind you I am an American, so I don't really understand Christmas pudding. HOWEVER, I can tell you, I have made a fruitcake ( it was my great grams recipe and we were feeling nostalgic that year) dang thing took 3 MONTHS to make ( literally I started in late September) weighed almost 3 POUNDS and cost about $25 dollars in ingredients… and I had to find the correct tin to put it in. So yeah I thought the pudding with container looked great.

  40. @kthomas3865

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

The way James answered Barry and had a straight face😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣.

    Rewatching these 😁😁

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Christmas cooking competition idea. Ben versus any normal courageous to make…. Christmas Pudding!!!!

  42. @MistyLunaLotus

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

That box of white chocolate truffles is the epitome of pretentious to me. The years of history, the royal family backing, the gold trim and tiny portion size, all screaming pretentious

  43. @cydday9914

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

5:01 at first I was sure Ben said "we can sell this shit"

  44. @Rapturnal

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

All things considered, there are a lot of confections and delights that come out around christmas time that are worth spending the extra money on – just for the 'journey'. My personal favourites are the christmas themed drinks (hot beverages, liquors) and the marshmallow chocolate santas.

  45. @gendoll5006

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

I’ve never understood giving Christmas themed gifts for Christmas. Unless you’re giving the gift like a week or two before Christmas so it can be used by Christmas, then what’s the point? Why would you want to eat candy canes or use Christmas tree pencils/pens, or Christmas scented candles or lotion AFTER Christmas lol. Like… unless you save it till next year and break it out Dec 1st lol, I don’t wanna use it after Christmas because I’m moving on to New Years decor for a short time and then winter themed stuff lol. That’s why I usually go more towards winter themed gifts if I have to, like snowflakes or snowmen for kids but even then it’s seasonal.

  46. @ogrejd

    January 11, 2024 at 8:32 am

Man, I'd hate to see a normal Christmas pudding if they think that disgusting thing looks great…
