    To rinse the herring before eating is a big NO NO in my house but we mostly eat it on our glass porch because after 7-8 herrings with side dishes you are very full and a little tired of the salty fermented smell, so if eating inside the house (and if you are a sissy) it is OK to rinse the fish. You should eat it (the "salty" fish for umami taste) with boiled potaoes, thin hard or soft bread with butter (the "sweet" accessorier) and chopped raw yellow onion (goes for the edgy sour taste) and in my opinion drink it with "bordsdricka", a sort of not so sweet Swedish "julmust" to tap of the salty edge. Then end the dinner with something sweet like Swedish Princess Cake or strawberries and vanilla ice cream with a cup of tea/coffee.

    Oh dear Lord I'm not even there and I'm gagging because I was very sick last night throwing up with something I don't know what and watching the stringiness come off that natto I started puking again 🤮

    Look, I like natto very much! I would eat everyday with raw egg but I would NEVER eat it without seasoning! There is now way you can eat it like that!

    Natto is interesting. Personally I don’t mind the flavours, but the texture obviously isn’t something normally embraced by western palates. I’m a Canadian living in the Caribbean and while natto indeed tastes deep and rich and umami, it indeed has an unfamiliar texture, even before you agitate it (which you’re supposed to do to accentuate the mucilaginous texture. It’s just not a texture I find I want to seek out. It’s really difficult to reconcile if you’re not used to it, but I wholeheartedly respect the tradition and place it holds in Japanese food culture.

    As someone with Chinese parents but growing up in Germany I quite like century eggs. They are so good in like a rice porridge

    We used that fermented fish to avoid gym class a couple of times in the 90's, always open in a bucket of water and never open indoors or close to air intakes unless you need that weapon😂

    Surströmmings contains high amounts of dioxin PCB so i never recommend this to people who wants to try it out..

    As a Swedish person I can confirm the smell is that horrible. You mention it's eaten outside and even then you can smell it from another street.

    Okay, I saw the can of surströmming and was like ”please open it under water and wash it.” Because whatever that liquid lands on, you have to change that. The smell won’t come out.
