the cake wasn't as picturesque as the original but for a first go? i'd be proud. i bet they all cried a little bit. a sweet gesture during the 'demic.

This is the clip I would like to go back and watch over and over again. Well done James, for tackle this challenge so beautifully. And the look when Ben saw the cake and heard Barry's talking is just so tender😢you guys are really the best, I mean I am bad at words but this just makes my heart melt.

To be fair, although the concept of chef and normal seems to set the chefs at such a high level and seemingly makes them perfect people who should know everything and never makes mistakes, it is common that everybody makes mistakes. James is not a pastry chef and he never made this cake before this video. I could almost see how Ben pushed himself so hard over the past all these years to always deliver the presentations so smooth and well prepared in front of the camera.

Sponge and frosting does NOT make a cake, it makes it a cupcake. A REAL cake has like jam and whipped cream.

  13. @pjiratip

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

There’s no cake flour in the UK? For some reason that’s very surprising. 🤔

To be honest he didn't have store bought buttermilk or cake flour and that does make a difference when baking. He did substitute cake flour with cornflour mixed with ap flour.

So I'm currently watching all of the Sorted Food videos in newest-oldest order…. My sister got me this cake for my birthday about a week after this video came out in June 2020. Honestly, what a coincidence!

My best guess as to why James burned the cake is that the recipe had the temperature for the oven as Fahrenheit and he put that number into the oven as Celsius. Some recipes here in the US just give a number with no Celsius or Fahrenheit label and assume the reader knows it’s Fahrenheit. Gotta love using international recipes and needing to do math to find out how not to burn your house down!
For someone who isn’t a baker AND is using an international recipe, you did an amazing job James! The first time I baked a cake, I had to have my baker mom hovering over my shoulder the whole time to make sure I didn’t mess anything up, and it was an American recipe!

I can almost guarantee if she is using "cheap" vanilla extract that people will "relate" to, it's most certainly going to be stuff like McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract and Tone's Pure Vanilla Extract. You'll find both of those as well as the multitude of rebranded "Great Value" type brands in every grocery store in the US.

Buttermilk with vinegar??? It’s vanilla flavored milk!

Cutting a cake that isn't frozen is…not advised.

  23. @HannibalFan52

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

The best way to make buttermilk is to actually make butter and save the liquid that's left over. That is true buttermilk, and it has a slightly sweet aftertaste, unlike the sour aftertaste of cultured buttermilk, like the stuff James made. I don't know about your side of the Pond, but here in the States, it's possible to get powdered buttermilk, but, again, it's cultured. The butter, which is unsalted, can be used in other dishes.

Tip: Rinse the butter well in cold water to get rid of any remaining buttermilk. If, when you use it, you get a slight whiff of sour, don't worry; it's simply the buttermilk that remains in the butter no matter how well you rinse it. If you can't use the butter within a few days, it freezes well.

The finished cake looks absolutely fantastic!! It must have tasted fabulous as well! Well done, James!! (Oh, and the look on Ben's face when he saw it was priceless!)

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

If you find your butter cream a little bit yellow you can add a little bit of purple food coloring and it'll make it white

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

James should do a video with the cupcake Jemma team 😹

Pretty good job, I dare say.. given the circumstances ^^; And I actually like the way James topped the cake over the original o-o just looks nicer imo (not sure how I can explain in what way it does).
    Loved the blooper lol
Weird timing, but Happy Birthday Ben!

I'm not sure why you think Americans bake sheet cakes then cut round cakes. We bake round cakes in round pans.

  32. @lyndaster46

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

As an older lady I have never even heard of this type of a birthday cake. I have lived in 15 countries and am American and have lived in most states as well. So I am wondering where this recipe even comes from. It is nowhere near my understanding a traditional American birthday cake. Not griping, just giggling about the obscureness and the weirdness of this recipe. It is also way trendy to use NO corn syrup in anything near kids….

  37. @cassandrakarpinski9416

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

I'd say the oven was a bit hot so it coloured up a little too much. Id say the oven only needed to be set about 5-10°C lower as it possibly runs a tad hot (my old one ran about 50°C above when set at 160° so it burned EVERYTHING. In oven thermometers are a blessing)

  38. @kars010

  42. @eldronado

Why am I not even surprised that US "standardized" pan sizes don't make any sense? Literally none of them are what they say they are. Quarter size is not 1/4 of the full size and so on. Confusing as always.

  43. @DaddyKratosOfTheShire

    January 9, 2024 at 9:24 pm

Just hopping back here a year later because I'm currently in the middle of making this cake and was mid-stress attack, so I thought I'd come get a little guidance. Completely forgot he'd burnt it, and I'm now feeling 100% better since he still managed to get it to turn out so lovely. I knew I was going to miss this man, but I didn't realize how much 😩
