While everyone is concentrating on the Conservative leadership election, in the background you might have missed the Liberal Democrats are having a race of their own. While the Lib Dems aren’t picking the person who will be the next Prime Minister of the country, their winner will still be a major figure. As arguably ‘THE’ remain party, the Lib Dem Leader will have a major role to play in the negotiations, especially if they get the opportunity to increase their share of parliament in a general election. In this video, we discuss the two candidates (Jo Swinson & Ed Davey) and explain how their policies differ.

Update: Jo Swinson won the party leadership election. She got 62,8% of the vote(47.997 votes), and Ed Davey 36,7%(28.021 votes).
The amount of people eligible to vote for this election(meaning everyone with party membership) was 105.480. This means the turnout for this election was 72%, 16% more than the Liberal Democrats party leadership election before it.
Jo Swinson will take over as leader on the 23rd of July.

Relatively untalked about, with the favourite candidate having a high chance to topple Brexit….

Exactly the underhand tactic I'd expect from parliament to stop Brexit.

As much as I would love our polity to be like this and as much as I tend to align with Lib Dems on many issues, I have to play devil's advocate by saying:

It's easy to be magnanimous and civil about appointing your party leader when you have very little actual power or influence on the issues that matter to people and when whatever your decision is will have no impact on the current shitstorm happening inside the government.

  20. @Sparrowash97

    January 7, 2024 at 2:57 pm

Not gonna watch this because I couldn’t care less about the leadership of the least Democratic Party I’ve ever seen. Once Brexit is over and done with the Lib Dem’s are going to be in some hot water. I’ll never be voting for them in my life because of the disgusting attitude they’ve had towards Brexit. It’s like they forgot they had the word “democrats” in their name. What’s Democratic about going against a referendum? Their a load of bull**

People may think I’m aggressive or even a troll ( I’m not) but just look ,please at what the liberals want you to forget, please!!
For those who believe the Liberal party tamed the savage cuts of the Tory government during their coalition please justify this voting record by Vince Cable!!! , here’s just a few things Vince Cable voted for!! evidence taken from parliament’s own records
How Vincent Cable voted on Welfare and Benefits (all Liberal M.P’s voted the same way)
Generally voted for reducing housing benefit for social tenants deemed to have excess bedrooms (which Labour describe as the "bedroom tax")
Consistently voted against raising welfare benefits at least in line with prices
Almost always voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability
Generally voted for making local councils responsible for helping those in financial need afford their council tax and reducing the amount spent on such support
Generally voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits
Almost always voted against spending public money to create guaranteed jobs for young people who have spent a long time unemployed

How long after the Conservative party election, will there be a general election?

Damn the Lib-Dems even manage to have a quintessentially middle class leader contest.
