I think Boris Johnson is playing smart here. Other candidates can do the same. I say it's fair enough. I think Boris will win.

irony, the party screaming about 'unellected' EU politicians blocking a general election so they can select a new prime minister without consulting the people they represent…

It is such an stupid system, YOU HAVE TO "cheat".

I think the global world have misunderstood what politicians are supposed to do. We're bored out of our minds and want an entertainer, but what we need is a boring, old and wise person to use their experience to guide the rest of the cabinet/ministry/whatever, and convey their decisions to the people. In the same regard, politicians should be caring about how to achieve the political goals they want – not how they can secure a seat. Personally, I feel all politicians should, universally, get the exact median wage of the country they're serving. Second, any special benefits should be removed outside security and other absolute needs (privacy, etc.). Third, there should be two groups of politicians instead of one: One for making suggestions, inspired by the public. And one for handling the bureaucracy and/or confirming the possibilities of the suggestions made; people like economists, social studies etc. Fourth, receiving donations or spending your private money on your campaign should be banned – if another person endorses you with their company, even because they're you're friend, is fair game. As long as your friend is putting his entire company' reputation on the line.

Now, the only person who can beat Boris Johnson is Boris Johnson

not really democratie if the next PM wasn't voted in by the general public…

  10. @Matticus333

What is it with conservative parties rigging the game? Its like in Ontario how Christine Elliott won the most ridings AND the popular vote in the Progressive Conservative leadership race, but Doug Ford still won based on a points system (Tanya Granic Allen supporters were instructed to back Ford). This allowed Doug Ford to lead the party in the election and is now premier. Talk about a democratic deficit.

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

its was wrong to do in the outside world, but this is politics and thats how you play the game. its all about bumping up and down to keep parliament fresh.

  12. @stevieinselby

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

My 2¢ … yes, almost certainly Johnson's campaign rigged the votes, and yes it absolutely does matter. This is the future direction and destiny of the country we're talking about, and it's bad enough that it is decided by just a handful of unrepresentative and unelected members of the public while the rest of us have no say, but for one of the candidates to orchestrate a campaign that allows him to hand-pick who his opponent is has to be the complete antithesis of democracy.

The way that the selection process is arcane and archaic, it's unnecessarily complicated and drawn out, and it is too easily susceptible to hostile manipulation, as we have seen here. If the principle is that the parliamentary party should whittle candidates down to a shortlist of two, to then go before the membership, then the party process should be in the form of STV or something similar, whereby MPs can give preference to multiple candidates. That would streamline the process and avoid it taking over the news for such a long period, and it would largely protect it against this kind of malicious action.

  13. @NeilForsythAU

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

Preferential voting in a single round would avoid this possibility, instead of multiple runoffs.

  14. @Bolsonaro_em_Haia

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

After some consideration, I have concluded that tactical voting is dangerous in the long term. It damages the ability to represent and listen to the real diversity of thoughts and trends, and therefore hurts the viability of democracy.

  16. @Yannis1a

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

I think that is time for the UK to have a modern constitution not just the Carta Magna and acts of parliament, the UK need a set of laws that the government must obey.
I also believe that the head of government shouldn’t be elected by the parliament but by popular vote, specially if it is by stv but that’s just my personal preference

  17. @LamLawIndy

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

I think that Boris's backers did indeed lend votes to Hunt to ensure that they chose the opponent that THEY preferred. I think that — given the rules — it would be imbecilic NOT to try to do this.

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

  26. @cinnamondonkey2397

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

What if it is Hunt's team that is doing the tactical voting? Maybe he has been lending his votes to Boris?

  27. @asktoseducemiss434

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

    altercation case in point…

  28. @ronfischer191

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

I noticed the head shots too, even the ones that look like a pro took them for the candidate look weird. I mean not one of them seems to be able to smile like they mean it. Is there some kind of law int he UK about political photos should all make the candidate look awful?

  29. @gavinbissell8847

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

The voters vote as they please, Boris doesn't tell them. If it's tactical voting that's between the voters. Don't forget Boris got screwed out of it the first time by a similar thing

  30. @paulgibbons2320

    January 6, 2024 at 2:29 pm

If he did. Well done. That's what the system is designed for.

Politicians doing slightly shady but legal tactics to further their agenda? I'm shocked.
