On Monday, Labour published a report suggesting a number of constitutional changes they wanted to make – most notable among them being major changes to the House of Lords. So should the Lords be scrapped for being undemocratic, or is it valuable?

It seems pretty much a certainty that Andy Burnham will be the next British prime minister. Exactly when it happens depends on a few factors. We outline some of the reasons an early general election is likely.

They want to get rid of the House of Lords so they can replace them with their own yes men and get anything they want passed , no matter how outrageous . And Labour will sell that to you by playing off Britsh people's inverted snobbery and stoking up hatred against people with more money than the average joe .

Well, Coming from Germany and being used to a two-elected-Chambers-system i Overall like to See the outcome of that in the UK. The Bundesrat (Second chamber of Parliament) is representing the governments of the 16 states of wich the Federal Republic of Germany is built. Therefore these State governments are elected in the respektive states and Not on the federal level. Some Laws made by the Bundestag (First chamber of Parliament) require the approval is the Bundesrat in addition, and when a law that Requiescat this approval of both Chambers it goes to a mediation Committee to get Problems fixed and gets the law approved by both Chambers. The question for me anyway is the level on wich it’s implemented in the UK is it on the governmental level of the Member states of the UK or is it on a local/Regional Level…

I think that the Home of Lords should be abolished asap . It's an undemocratic throwback to a bygone age and has no relevance to today's problems. Meanwhile It's powers should be immediately withdrawn as should the amendments to the illegal migrant bill .Just about the one and only reason to vote Labour.

The house of lords supresses bills but to what benifit. Our local elected mayors represent a more definite public voice and opinion. But the voice of sum is outwieghed by a rewarded many. Its a diluted liquid of the state. A house of etticute not respect for those who say thier fair opinion. Its become a electorate bypass.

If the house of lords is so good at scrutinising legislation then the UK should have better legislation compared to the US and other allies? Is that really true?
@DTL9164
January 5, 2024 at 4:50 am
Don't scrap the House of Lords. However flawed it may be, if we elect thr House of Lords, we will go from having common sense people to zero iq elected politicians scrutinising the legislature. We need reforms to the House of Lords to stop the Prime Minister from making corrupt appointments, to eliminate the nuissance of hereditary peers and to place a cap on membership.

This is what I really object to in all the coverage around the Brown Report. The proposals that get all the attention are the most banal and least bold. Brown argues for a quite drastic shift towards localism throughout british politics, drastically narrowing the power gap. That is, I think, the far more insightful and important part of the report, the one that addresses our real problems, but gets no attention.
