With Scotland and Northern Ireland more seriously discussing leaving the UK, we thought we’d turn to another more ‘separatist-friendly’ part of the union… Cornwall. In this video we’ll discuss why some want out and if that’s actually possible.

Independence ia a bridge too far: expensive venture, and second England does not want strategicall important peninsula to leave the UK.

On the other hand, I believe that devolution is really possible outcome.

Wouldn't this make the Duke of Cornwall, and all the inhabitants foreigners?

  4. @TheBadVideoMaker

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

There is some evidence that Cornish born people voted to remain, while the significant numbers of incomers were responsible for tipping the balance to leave.

There aren't many Cornish people in Cornwall. Most are English/Anglo. The 2021 Census showed only 14% of the population of Cornwall identified as Cornish. You can't build an ethnically based independence movement off of that low a number.

One must ask how much the English monarch cares about those it still treats as its ‘subjects’ in Kernow. Each year, it’s government offers a mere 3 million GBP, but the Duke of Cornwall expects payment of 20 million GBP into its consolidated revenue for use in enjoying the irrational privilege of a persistent remnant feudal system—the ‘monarchy’—in the 21st century.

No wonder Boris Johnson and the Tories wanted Brexit.

Look at all of the funding that Brexit has gutted from poor areas in the UK.

  18. @white-dragon4424

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

Devolution is a marriage of convenience, cherry picking the bits they want and rejecting the bits they don't want. You're either a part of England or you go completely independent, as in a hard border, separate passports and economy. No scooting over the border for goodies whenever you need them. Independence might have worked in the 6th Century, but not in the 21st Century, especially with zero economy. Wales would stand more chance at being independent than Cornwall would!

Yeah great go on your own, the poorest county in England, an even bigger joke than the SNP

  23. @timflatus

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

King Athelstan defined the English border as running along the east bank of the Tamar. It has never been defined otherwise. So Cornwall is the only county of England which isn't in England. Additionally, most of the Duchy of Cornwall isn't actually in Cornwall!

  24. @megapixies

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

How do you get a Cornishman to run a small business?
Give them a big one and wait.
We’ll need a radical change in our local Council before we gain any form of independence, the majority are as bent as a hula hoop.

The problem with cornish idependence i think is their size, if we reform dumnonia however then we are talking, simply uniting cornwall, devon, dorest and somerset should be enough for our independence

Im curious, as an outsider to all this, if anyone has considered transferring Cornwall from England to Wales, based on shared Celtic heritage and relative proximity, and both giving Cornwall more say within Wales than they have within England and giving them both, as a bloc, more power within the UK? Its not like the petty kingdoms of Wales have much legacy of pre-conquest political unity that can be pointed to as it is, so why not work together?

  31. @markseeley8476

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

Good riddance, give them their independence, they hate the English and just about everyone else.

I took one of those DNA tests and they tell me I'm 51% Cornish. Prior to that I thought I was almost 100% English. I'm too old to visit the UK so I'll just watch some Cornwall videos.

I live in the valleys of Wales. A fella from Cornwall moved to the valleys.. I got to know him and I would give him stick for being English. He used to bark back, I'm not English I'm Cornish.

A full independence referendum, then rejoining the EU and restoring the language as a first spoken language of the whole population! That’s the only way!!! Nothing less.

  36. @Ch-xk5tv

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

Do Cornish feel as a part of England or as a seperate province?

  37. @richardsmith2825

    January 5, 2024 at 3:48 am

    Unlikely.

Like Wales vast numbers of “white flight” English retirees have poured into the celtic hinterlands.

By doing so they wipe out the language, demographic make up, and politics of the area.

Incidentally the word “Senedd” is pronounced with a soft DD.

Kernow by Royal decree should have the same status as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. A status which Westminster choose to ignore. Even Alfred the Great recognised the Britons, as we were then called, as being independent. My Granfa always said emmets from across the River would kill the country, was he right? Kernow bys vyken!
