Sikh murder row: How India-Canada ties descended into a public feud – BBC News

Published

on

The escalating row over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader has the potential to derail years of close relations between Canada and India, two key strategic partners on security and trade.

The rift burst into the open on Monday when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada was investigating “credible allegations” about the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.

India responded furiously – it “completely rejected” the allegations, calling them “absurd”. Both have expelled one of the other’s diplomats and it’s unclear how they now pull back from the brink.

Just a few months ago, the countries were making progress towards signing a free trade agreement – long in the works – this year. Now, talks are paused and an imminent Canadian trade mission to India postponed.

So what is the Indian government saying now? There is more egg dripping from Modi's face, but only slightly more than what is on Pierre Le Pew Polivre's face.

I thank the Govt of Canada for letting these types of ill literate terrorists in their country, please hold them there only as they will damage peace and harmony in India, I hope Great Canada will never face the situation, where these people may ask for Khalistaan in Canada itself… As they are kicked and killed in Pakistan, so they left that Punjab coz they are scared of them and country which help them stay in India when kicked from Pakistan and Afganistan, So canadians be vigilant coz they are the people who cut the tree itself which offer it's branch to them.

Majority of Sikhs migrated to India from Pakistan in 1947 because after partition, Muslims started killing them, raping their females and looting their properties. After establishing themselves in India, and making a Sikh majority state in Punjab. Their political leaders started an arm struggle in 1970s with India to establish a Sikh homeland. They killed more than 30000 innocent Hindus in Punjab and asked Hindus to leave Punjab or be ready to die. In turn security agencies killed the same numbers of armed Khalistani Sikhs to establish peace in Punjab. This is a warning for Canada and it's political leadership. Khalistani will be the same in Canada.

As a UK citizen I can tell you BBC is one of the most racist and anti-India organization along with most other western media. The quality of this report is pathetic and the Chinese person being interviewed does not even understand the difference between allegations and evidence. BBC does not even understand that you cant ask a Chinese person about India, they should ask her about China first and see her expose herself when she goes on a rant talking about how good China is.

    January 3, 2024 at 5:35 am

Bloody hell, they're khalistanis not Sikhs, why is that so difficult to understand? Selective labelling yet again. Would you call ISIS and Al Qaeda Muslim activists?? No, they're terrorists.

Sikhs are probably the most loved and patriotic Indians out there, former prime minister and the largest contributor to the indian army. Have Sikhs always been treated well? No, but no country is perfect and that's what you get with 1.4 billion. I'm Tamil and we've been discriminated against but I'm not going to cry about seceding.

If the West wants to partner with India against China, then this needs to stop. This is why we haven't cut off Russia yet because you can't be trusted with your divisive agendas

A terrorist murder row, not a Sikh leader. Can’t believe we pay TV licence for this one sided bullshit. Nijjar was on no fly list in Canada, he entered Canada illegally, he was separatist against sovereignty of one nation

  27. @gsb5859

    January 3, 2024 at 5:35 am

In a generation the separatist movement will come to an end for one reason … a huge Sikh diaspora. Ironically because of how poorly run India has been since it’s inception, so many Sikhs have left Punjab to live abroad. The Sikh diaspora will eventually assimilate with the dominant local culture (already happening in the UK) and Sikhism outside Punjab will fade into obscurity. From that dwindling Sikh population, Sikhs left in Punjab will be far to small to ever be heard.

Even though it is still in a state of accusation rather than proven fact, a wing of media fails to mention what Peire Trudeau did in the 70s time to a separatist group. The treatment they recieved was't certainly someone gets for peaceful protest and freedom of expression .
Some western media even doing PR for a man whom they paint as plumber and activist but fails to mention the word separatist, I guess hypocracy has passed it's threshold otherwise, a certain wanted person gunned down by a certain country in a diffrent country should have had the privilege to be called an engineer. 🙏

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
