Blind Tasting PREMIUM Ingredients vs BUDGET Ingredients | Where Best to Spend Your Money? Ep. 3

Published

on

We love any excuse to blindfold our normals, Barry and Jamie, and in this episode, we’re challenging them to taste-test a bunch of everyday food products to see if they can pick the premium option. This is our weird and wonderful experiment to uncover where it’s best to spend your cash, and where it’s worth tightening the purse strings!

Hit play, watch the expensive champagne flow and get ready for delicious pancakes covered in streaky bacon and maple syrup!

You can find out more about the ingredients we’ve reviewed in the links below. Just so you know, a couple of these are affiliate links, which means if you buy something from the store after clicking on
them, the store will pay us a percentage of your basket… This doesn’t
cost or change anything else for you!

Why do they – including a professional – invent a pronunciation and pronounce Moët as "moh-ay"?

You guys should do triangle test, 3 samples 2 the same 1 different, you have to pick the odd one out and if it's the premium or not. It's way more effective in blind testing when comparing things that are very similar

    Chocolate/Yes(Iprefer Mexican), Cheese/Yes-every time! Champagne/Yes(Preference is dryer), Bacon/Yes!

(on the bacon) would have loved to see if they could tell the difference if the slices had been the same thickness since the thickness is a clear giveaway when it comes to price.

I really wonder how I would do with something like this. I don't have much of a sense of smell, so I might be really bad at figuring out the differences between similar ingredients.

HI, it's me from the past, but also strangely from the future compared to when this was filmed. Anyway, I just wanted to say Jamies's olfactory sensitivity has been demonstrated time and again. Speaking of which, thank you for your time to read this.

Champagne freak here, hell I even got my champagne tattoo. The normals where spot on. The thing with the two better ones and especially the Dom is of course they are much more age worthy and with time the difference would be much much bigger.

  25. @HelloTardis

    January 3, 2024 at 2:43 am

To replicate the indulgent hot chocolate, one can use milk with a splash of heavy-/double-cream and use a grater or vegetable peeler to shave a bar of quality 85% chocolate. Warm the milk, then mix in the chocolate; I tend to use a stick blender or blender cup (like the magic bullet).

Loving this stuff. How about eggs… find someone that has home grown eggs (if that makes sense – I'll elaborate), then get some farm shop organic free range eggs, then some supermarket budget eggs. Do a boiled egg, fried egg, a poached egg, scrambled and a fairly plain omelette. OK Home grown eggs… my wife has kept chickens for maybe 5 or 6 years. They are pets with benefits. So they get a great diet (as in high quality food) plus they range around (large) parts of our garden and they are fed high quality treats most days – bits of banana that is going over, chopped up bits of tomato from the garden where they have split or gone a bit soft – you get the picture. These chickens live well. And IMO their eggs are amazing – not just my opinion, we give a few away in the summer months and folks are blown away by the golden yolks and the flavour. So compare different eggs at different price poi9nt in different applications. I'd guess that poached and fried are most sensitive to sourcing and (of course) freshness – maybe boiled too… scrambled and omelette maybe not so much as you add butter and 'other stuff'.

I could pick the premium of all of them. The Champaign was easy to pick.
