Australia’s indigenous people say they’re still suffering legacy of British colonialism – BBC News

Published

on

Recent protests in Australia have highlighted the grievances of the country’s indigenous people, who continue to suffer deep-rooted poverty and inequality.

Successive governments there have described it as a “national shame”. Now the issue has been given a new focus following the Black Lives Matter protests in the United States and around the world.

Sophie Raworth presents the latest BBC News at Ten report exploring Britain’s colonial legacies. Shaimaa Khalil in Sydney considers the treatment of indigenous Australians.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that this report contains images of deceased people.

Ponder this: the longest lived people in the world, in Blue Zones, have much more in common with pre-colonisation Aborigines than they do with us Westerners, yet we're told that life was harsh and short-lived in the past, before the Industrial Revolution and modern medicine. Look at the lifestyles of folk on Ikaria, or Sardinia, and you'll find people who move about a lot, trekking for long periods in order to simply meet up, or get some basic task complete. They generally don't own modern white goods, instead, they clean things by hand, which burns calories.

In fact, looking at what they don't have and don't do is possibly more instructive. They don't eat fast or processed food. They don't drive cars, or very rarely. They don't sit around all day in an office. They don't sit in traffic jams. They don't move away from their family in search of work. They hardly eat meat. They don't live in densely populated towns or cities, which feature air, light and noise pollution. They don't get worked up about the news and social media, because their world is their village or area, not some far-flung corner of the planet. They don't drink a lot of alcohol, or take drugs. It's basically the opposite lifestyle of millions of Americans and Brits. These people are consistently living beyond 100, yet we are dying at 78, miserable and alone, bloated from all the unnatural shit we cram into our bodies.

Now tell me who is more civilised.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

Recent protests in Australia have highlighted the ongoing issues faced by the indigenous population, including widespread poverty and inequality.
Indigenous Australians, who make up less than three percent of the population, represent more than a quarter of adult prisoners and over half of youth detainees, making them the most incarcerated people in the world.
The current justice system is seen as unfairly targeting young Aboriginal people, and there are concerns about the cycle of incarceration continuing for future generations.
These issues have deep historical roots in Australia's colonial past, including the forced removal of indigenous children from their homes and systemic discrimination.
Captain James Cook, once considered a hero, is now controversially seen as a figure responsible for the displacement and dispossession of Australia's first nations people.
Calls for shifting resources away from policing and prisons and implementing structural changes to address systemic discrimination and over-policing.
While some community-based justice projects receive government funding, many small charities, like Keenan's, rely on donations to help young people avoid prison.
The hope among young indigenous Australians is for a future different from the trauma and violence suffered by their ancestors.

Maybe the biased and leftist BBC should stay in its own lane when pushing the usual anti Western self hatred ..we have our own ABC to tell us how hideous we are! Aboriginal life expectancy is twice that fo the Irish and English convicts that arrived in chains from Britain a couple of a hundred years ago. Heaps of white kids were also taken from their parents during that period if they weren't being properly looked after. And thousands of kids of unmarried mothers were sent here from Britain until very recently….there's a good doc for the BBC.
Interesting that there were lots of statistics of incarceration but none about the number of crimes committed and by whom…..you don't get arrested for picking flowers……….No mention of the money spent on indigenous people each year either……over $34 billion a year…….thats around $42,000 per person….which is twice what is spent on white people. ………Bringing in George Floyd was not helpful…..he was a criminal who held a gun to a pregnant woman while his friends burgled her house and he died of a fentanyl overdose……he was screaming "I can't breath" before he even got out of the car. However, he became a saint because it suited the agenda of the Marxist BLM leaders (who bought lovely homes in Bel Air with the donations like all great socialists) By the way, there are many very wealthy and successful aboriginals …they are not all "disadvantaged! ….just as there are amidst the white community. PS did everyone think that Australia , an island and a continent, was going to go unnoticed beyond the 60,000 years that it did.

Unbelievable….. sensationalism you never show the positive, Aboriginal lawyers, doctors, business owners, Senators teachers and students having free entry to Universities, health care etc. The Aboriginals have as much right as any other Australian. Show the positives of today if you are showing the negatives.
Everyone has equal rights here. You make of your life what you will. The Aboriginals in the remote part of the country are the people who need the help not the majority that live in and around the cities.
The past as with every country in the world had it's atrocities, it is the now that matters. 200 years ago and blaming the whole of Australia is wrong. You can't blame the son for what the fathers has done.
To the person below: So the Germans, the Danish, the Chinese I could go on, have not caused consequences with their atrocities, lets be fair.

  39. @James-kv6kb

    January 3, 2024 at 7:10 am

The reason why Aboriginal people suffer in this country is because the land councils which are the financial body that's supposed to give the money is highly corrupt and doesn't give them a single set so don't blame the government or the Australian people because we doing everything we possibly can do but they won't help themselves

The truth is that the activists are the ones who keep the aborigines in the cycle of poverty and crime. There are a number of Aboriginal corporations that are given millions of dollars by the governments and they are overseen by Aboriginals to administer that money into the communities.
Yet as questions which have been raised in Parliament, What happened to the money?
The reason why the aboriginals are over represented in being sent to prison is there are more of them in the Outback than whites.
What this program isn’t showing or telling you is the violence within the Aboriginal communities is horrific. A few years ago nineteen men attacked and murder a woman in their community.
They didn’t show you the drunkenness which includes the children getting drunk and the petrol sniffing, not to mention kids running amok in Outback towns.
The program doesn’t tell you that the Aboriginals have had the vote since 1967 , shocking as it is, they have elected representatives in parliament, they are given more benefits than the white population.
There are many Aboriginals who despite what happened in the past have managed to escape the welfare trap that the activists and some politicians want to keep them in and made a life for themselves.
The past is what it is and yes it’s not pretty but then the history of humanity isn’t all sugar and spice. The real problem today there are many who have a vested interest in keeping the Aboriginal people in the past to keep themselves relevant.

The Australian tax payer – indigenous or not – have been paying billions of dollars to Aboriginal Affairs and still there is outcry. An apology by then PM was made to Aboriginal people but still outcry. A sense of entitlement is now apparent that Australians still must 'pay'. This is a rod that Aboriginal people need to remove. Stop looking back and look forward – there's no other choice. Aboriginal people have a voice as do the rest of Australians. We ALL feel that at times we're not being heard.

Meghan apologises to court for misleading statement in privacy case – BBC News

Published

on

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has apologised to a court for forgetting about biography briefing notes she gave to an aide, in her privacy case against the Mail on Sunday’s publishers.

The Appeal Court heard she had asked an aide to pass on information to the authors of a biography – despite having earlier said she “did not contribute” to the work.

Meghan said she had forgotten the events and had not intended to mislead.

Associated Newspapers is trying to overturn a ruling after it published a letter from the duchess to her father.

Meghan, 40, won her privacy case against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday earlier this year, when the High Court found its publication of the letter was unlawful.

Iran-US peace talks fail to reach deal as Washington issues ‘final offer’ | BBC News

Published

Vice-President JD Vance has said that the US and Iran failed to reach an agreement following lengthy peace talks in Pakistan.

The delegations met in Islamabad during a temporary ceasefire.

Vance said the US “could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms”. Halting Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been a “core goal” that wasn’t reached.

Iran’s foreign ministry says the talks were “intensive”, and called on Washington to refrain from “excessive demands and unlawful requests”.
