The Exit Poll: Can You Trust It? – TLDR Explains

Published

on

Election Night Livestream: https://youtu.be/utsJPo9rR5s

One of the most important moments of election night is the release of the exit poll. The exit poll tries to gauge how people voted and which party will hold power at the end of the night. In this video, we discuss how they do it and if the results can truly be trusted.

Is it ok to say I don’t like the exit poll because it ruins it. I want to wait and get results gradually the exit poll feels like a spoiler

The exit poll predicts how many seats a party will get within a band of 20 seats either way and it gives the middle figure which was 368 for the Tories. This meant it could have been any number between 348 and 388 seats for the Tories meaning if it was out by under 20 they got a majority of 40 and if it was out by over 20 a majority of 120. Anyway the poll predicted a Tory majority even if it over estimated the Tory vote. There was no way Labour were going to win unless the poll was way, way, way out.

I think the problem with the '92 exit poll was it had never been done before and there was no accurate data to compare it with. There was no exit poll in the '87 election. That was just an opinion poll done in one area.

In response to your poll today on how to improve UK elections – please can you make a video explaining the difference between FPTP and Proportional Representation? Or if it already exists can someone please point me to it? Thank you very much. ♥️

I set a reminder for the live but didn't get any notifications… I was really excited to watch it, I thought it was postponed, removed or something 🙁

It seems unfair for the LD compared to the the SNP for example. They got ~11% of the votes to take only 11 seats versus 3.9% for 48 seats.. Can you elaborate on that point?

I don't get it, what's the point of the exit poll?

you'll find out the actual results the next day

One issue that probably needs to be considered now is that polling stations don't "close" at 10pm. They close the queue, which is different. If you're in the queue at 10pm, even if you're still outside, you're allowed to vote. And with almost everyone having smartphones these days, there is a greater risk that anyone still in the queue can access the exit poll if it is called at 10pm, which could influence their vote.

I find corruption in the Exit poll. How does it display the exact number of seats. And when the ballot papers are counted its correct. The exit polls are surveyed to 20,000 people.

BBC Parliament wasn't a thing in 92. I think the BBC wants their segment back.

Honestly, it’s hard to trust you guys recently when you release videos with errors multiple times and obviously can’t even be bothered to have a final watch of your videos.

I love how people thought this election was going to be close. People who watch this channel think they know politics but you clearly live in a bubble.

Looks like the British are tired of the liberals force feeding their ideas down their throats just like here in the US.
