Thus far the results of Brexit have been mixed at best, so with Britain’s fortunes looking rough some are suggesting that the UK realigns with the EU. This could involve forging a ‘Swiss Style’ deal with the EU. So what would that mean & is it likely?

I like how deluded Britts think that EU is a free buffet where you can eat whatever you want and as much as you want without paying.
@bellissimo4520
December 30, 2023 at 12:01 pm
LOLOLOLOLOL… this coming from Switzerland: The EU is NEVER going to agree to another "Swiss-style" agreement. They already hate the one they have with our country. It is the very definition of "cherry picking". Also note that those dozens of agreements were all negotiated decades ago, starting when the EU still had a lot less members. And more importantly, the agreements include Switzerland accepting EU rules, paying into various EU funds, accepting jurisdiction of the ECJ (in all matters related to the single market etc.) and – possibly most importantly – freedom of movement. And all this without having any say whatsoever in making up those rules and laws. Switzerland is a Grade A rule-taker… but hey, we are "sovereign".
Also of note: Mostly due to Brexiteer-level moronic right-wing politicians, Switzerland currently doesn't want to renew all the agreements it has with the EU, only certain specific ones, to which the EU says "No, can't have that, it's all or nothing" – and chances are very much intact that all those agreements will collapse in the next few years. Then Switzerland will be just as much a 3rd country as the UK is now.
I really don't think this is a valid route for the UK to try to take…

I had a friend back in university. His parents divorced because the father thought he could get a better woman. He couldn't, an ended up back with the family – but the mother wasn't willing to re-marry. So, he ended up being at the same place, in the same family and the same capacity in practice – only officially he was no longer part of the family.
True story, and I dunno why I suddenly remembered it after all these year…

As much as I love the UK. The EU must stand firm. You can not have your cake and eat it too. Perhaps at some point the UK can rejoin it's brethren. For now, just try to get by.

First of all, you cannot do a Swiss deal, because Switzerland was never in the EU. Secondly, Switzerland has to do as they are told, because they are a tiny country with a small population and they have also found out that they are not an island unto themselves. Switzerland found out the hard way that they need lots of foreign workers, and they need the EU to buy their products. Watches and chocolate are not absolute necessities, either is cheese! Ask Switzerland how quickly they were kicked out of the Erasmus deal!!!!!

For the UK to have a Swiss style relationship they’d have to join Schengen. Which they aren’t likely to do.
@turriddu6421
December 30, 2023 at 12:01 pm
Swiss is a much more organised country than the UK. As one example, their local agriculture could not survive without the money from their government, that means taxes from the people. And they benefit from their banks secrecy , where drug dealers and all kind of smugglers can hide their stolen money. I doubt that British people are ready to pay the amount of taxes a Swiss has to pay.
In contrast , for decades, the UK has been selling the country's property to private interests for the sake of "liberal economics" that was supposed to bring an healthy concurrence that never occured.
Seen from Europe, the Brexit is a relief , as the British elected members are no more there to fight every law that could lead to social improvements because "it's against liberal economics".
Nonetheless, I think that Europe without UK is smaller than before and more dependant from US, China, Russia, even India (India sells to Europe refined petrol bought from Russia).
@krzyjstr13
December 30, 2023 at 12:01 pm
I am an American and I do not really have the political background to fully understand Brexit the way a European would, and especially not a Brit, so forgive me if this is a stupid question but why is Britain so opposed to freedom of movement?? It seems to me to be the one thing people would want. For example from my own life, I would love to go to Mexico for a weekend without needing a travel passport. it seems to me being able to travel just for a holiday would be convenient?? But if I think about it politically, my only assumption is that the British government and people are worried about illegal immigration because of no border controls??

6:01 The much vaunted trade deals have not materialised.
A trade deal does not necessarily translate to contracts or more importantly PROFITS for UK Ltd.
The UK government is slowly waking up to this as it runs out of things to blame (covid, Ukraine, strikes, energy, weather etc) and sees European economies race ahead while UK stagnates.

No Deal is not UK prosperity.
Only a fool thinks a UK trade deal with Trump is the only trade deal with the US in town.
Shocking there has been no plans for talks to do a trade deal with Biden. Remember when Johnson said he wss desperate to do a deal with the US throughout 2020 but suddenly whwn Biden became president there was no desperation to do one with the US.

As I understand it, the Swiss member status was based on the fact that it was considered economically vulnerable, and that the country was only economically viable because there was plenty of pro-business law there that there wasn't in other countries. The EEC was (simplifying massively) an attempt for western Europe to remove competitive forces that would become a race to the bottom as countries undercut each other in attempts to attract business.
The problem is that the EU is no longer a Western and Central European thing — it's gone a long way to welcome in Eastern European countries as they've modernised.
The Swiss deal looks shaky against that backdrop. Why should Austria, a rich country, have more permissive regulations than more recent members recovering from being Soviet satellite states, or from the violent dissolution of Yugoslavia?
They should not. But the Swiss deal is done, and there's no way out of it for the EU without Austria's proactive initiative.
The UK does not have any of the conditions that were existent in pre-EEC Austria.
Austria: landlocked;
UK: surrounded by sea on all sides.
Austria: reliant on labour-intensive farming due to mountainous territory;
UK: massively industrialised agriculture involving large flat arable areas and the overstocking of livestock monocultures in upland areas.
Austria: history of low economic investment;
UK: history of massive economic competition with France and Germany, and Germany lost economic power after WW2, leaving the economic dominance in Europe a two-horse race between UK and France. (The US being the big winner in world terms because they didn't had no rebuilding to do.)
The UK has is recent history undercut the other EU states to draw global business onto the UK; something that was only undone when the EU accepted new members in countries where costs were even lower. We called foul on this — why was our lowering of worker rights "fair".
We've introduced "free ports" which undercut people's rights in ways that EU member states would consider illegal. Why would we, a rich country (although far less so since we abandoned the EU) be permitted to keep things that are denied to poorer countries by EU law?
Even Austria wouldn't get an Austrian deal if they were applying today. We are absolutely not going to get it.

Fairly absurd idea since the only reason the Swiss have their relationship with the EU is because historically they have always been removed from greater continental pacts. While not a defensive agreement, joining the EU does include some military trade protection responsibilities and requirements. The UK asked for a breakup, not a break or for an open relationship. And they were mean about it too. Now they can bake all the non-edible cakes they want without interference.

December 30, 2023 at 12:01 pm
I don't understand where the MPs are getting the idea that the EU needs or wants any kind of agreement with the UK in any regard xD Why would anyone do the UK that kind of favour, what does the UK have to offer 27 nations cannot? The idea that Brexit will be "un-done" without EU setting extensive block and demands will be laughable at worst.
@johnlawrence2757
December 30, 2023 at 12:01 pm
I have had the impression that the purpose of Brexit was to allow UK business (and individuals) a greater level of autonomy. However if Brexit is to be viewed entirely from the perspective of UK exporters, autonomy is not a major concern. Quite the reverse and there is little doubt that the Brexit deal contains elements that are purely punitive and, indeed, spiteful.
But we can depart from the notion that Great Britain PLC is nothing other than an exporter. We can look at the absurdity of some UK companies importing commodities that other UK companies are exporting. Multi-national ownership throws up much incongruity like this, and the British Parliament is no longer an indigenous body. Capitalism is a confounded mess. We need to get back to basics and stop living beyond our means – which EU encouraged and underwrote.
Parliament needs to look at how manufacturing, agriculture, media, retail and wholesale can be rationalised to work in a harmonious and self-sufficient whole. It may be very nice to eat strawberries in November, apples in January and bananas all the year round, but these are artificially contrived luxuries that require exhaustive fiscal and structural mechanisms.
It’s distasteful for a classic bourgeois culture to have to reign in its behaviour but unfortunately there is no alternative. Public ownership of the means of production. Self-sufficiency in sustenance and education and mobility and once these are achieved then maybe have a look at what can be gained from the export market
