Tensions build between autism researchers and the autistic community – BBC Newsnight
What scientists should, or shouldn’t, research is usually poured over in funding boards and ethics committees.
But the future of autism research is now commonly argued over on social media – as the autistic community speaks up about the type of research carried out, and the language used.
Newsnight’s Science and Technology Correspondent Kate Lamble reports.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News
Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.
Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.
At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.
So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?
AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.

How are you I appreciate this video a lot as I’ve learned after 37 years that I was diagnosed with Autism & ADHD as a child and was taken off the medication at 10 years old because people felt God would deliver me from a so called brain disorder…. I’m so tired of religion because it has made people extremely ignorant especially if someone has a Neurological difference…. How would I obtain my IEP from school with this information as I’m attempting to get financial resources because it’s always been difficult for me to obtain a 9 – 5 job and actually keep it longer than 5 months ????

Yes, I agree that biological research needs to be done, but that is no logical research, not genetic research, it’s a neurological disorder, not a genetic one.

December 27, 2023 at 12:24 pm
There’s no reason to do a genetic study, other than finding the genetic markers for ASD, if you can’t recognize the dangers in you, a study, like that, and I study with that goal, please look up what eugenics is, it has happened before, and it is happening, to other groups, other minorities, it may not be a government, hell, it might not even be a company, but look at those Asians, do you affect the social, view of things, and societies view of autism spectrum disorder, is still, one of incapacitation, despair, and inaccuracy.

I am autistic and find the chief problem with this report is that the BBC took the people seriously who call themselves "the autistic community". It is in fact a small cohort of cranks who constantly protest that they are persecuted, and then try to obstruct the very scientists who are trying to help them. Perhaps the BBC should stop dignifying their complaints. The first step would be to stop referring to them as "the autistic community". Getting 1000 signatures from the neurodiversity cult is no great feat in the digital age.

Autism Speaks is the result of neurotypicals researching autism. And they have caused more harm to the autism community than good. This is an example as to why autistic people are getting increasingly more fed up with incorrect research. They don't want another autism speaks or eugenics situation. They know the implications of incorrect research and the damage it can do and has done. It's best that reseachers listen to the autism community.

And was my intelligent neurodivergence actually adaptive in that i have the capacity to handle complexity and break all intergenerational patterns because i understand behavioural science psychology and how addiction and trauma create denial and ignorance…its the authoritarian parenting culture thats horrific for autism my son wld be a controlling male tyrant a generation ago but due to new understanding he is an autistic socially lacking male not an evil mysogenist🤔miltons double empathy theory disappears in non authoritarian (ie polyvagal trauma informed environments) fact

Many high-functioning autistism activists, like @realpaigelayle and @fosteronthespectrum, have been patroling the medias, calling out anyone who portrays low-functioning autism cases and making outrageous statements like "we're not like that". They shun those who post information about meltdowns or the damage caused by autism. These evil individuals want to be the face of autism and oppose any kind of treatment. They DON"T CARE about the children who can't even speak and need lifetime care.

To people who like to vent about how much your autistic children, students, or patients drive you insane and make you miserable: You have NO idea how much anxiety, frustration, self-loathing, loneliness, and sadness many of us have to go through nearly every single day, partially because of how you talk about us when we aren’t around. Believe it or not, most of us on the spectrum are fully aware of how much of a “handful” we can be for you, and we feel deeply ashamed and guilty as a result. We care about your hardship and suffering as much as you care about ours (the people who claim we are generally incapable of empathy or feeling the pain of others are full of s%;t). If we could stop doing the things that stress you out so much, we absolutely would. But just like a man with severe paralysis can’t simply get off his wheelchair to lessen the burden of those taking care of him, we simply cannot “stop being autistic” as much as we would love to make things much easier for you. If it’s wrong to complain about having to look after someone with physical disabilities, then it’s also wrong to complain about caring for people with developmental disabilities as if you are the true victim. Yes you are dealing with A LOT, you are being pushed to your limits, your patience and resilience is being out to the test; but if you truly and genuinely care about us and not want us to feel like worthless parasites, then stop talking about us as if we are a constant source of pain and stress and headaches. We may not be there when you talk about us like that, but we can hear you. And it not only hurts us A LOT, but it completely contradicts you telling us that we are “fully loved and embraced for who we are” and are “not a burden in the slightest.”

If Simon was trying to help anyone but himself he'd have figured out by now that Diogenes Syndrome is adult autistic regression aka “autistic burnout” (severe) in undiagnosed ASD L1 w/o intellectual disability, so a sequela of undiagnosed Asperger’s. It's not rare but apparently it's also not obvious. And still somehow a patient in the disabled group upon whom absence of empathy is projected by the very personality types who create our disability had to figure out THROUGH MY DISABILITY what no one in these so-called "caring professions" with professional training and postgraduate educations managed to even speculate from within their own field's research!
Diogenes patients have high IQs but posttraumatic erosion of executive function. We also don’t trust doctors… and that is of course because they do shit like pretend emotionally neglectful mothers don’t cause autism. Simon has drunk the Kool-Aid. ASD is quite obviously severe anxious attachment, and ADHD severe avoidant attachment, but psychiatry has made-up “reactive attachment disorder” to explain “autism-like traits” caused by attachment injury. Well, apparently, I’m not disabled enough to miss that.
I got a 130+ on the stanford-binet which is high enough to figure out that north of about 135 they're too unreliable to be even worth pursuing with one of the other instruments out there. So I don't know my IQ but it's high enough to figure out anyone claiming one significantly higher is probably lying. The way to know grifted kids is a racket is pediatric IQ tests go four and five standard deviations from the mean. Only even bringing this up because I suppose that's a type of neurodivergence. The irony is that ideology is by definition homogeneous so keep the label, thanks… I'll do my own thinking and refer to myself however I choose.
That said, Simon is very diplomatic about it but he still is working against truth under the assumption that because we have a developmental delay we lack the maturity to accept reality. It's quite clear that the vast majority of the most vocal of us do… And Simon only works toward perpetuating that because he's in a position to mischaracterize us as a single catch-all phenotype of whom he and his colleagues don't even acknowledge our full-lifespan humanity. Remember the money's only in the treatment as long as there's no apparent prevention or cure. A partial preventive misrepresented as absolutely preventative would make BANK before the class-action lawsuits we probably lack the fortitude with which to benefit anyone but our own attorneys began.
For instance, how does it make ANY SENSE for women who have autism diagnoses without intellectual disability to take the reckless risk of becoming mothers if they REALLY think autism is “genetic“ and not behaviorally heritable within families (to which they’re somehow magically immune), anyway? Rhetorical. Reckless mothers who take no accountability OBVIOUSLY cause autism, duh. The genome's been sequenced for over a dozen years. It's safe for Simon to keep looking for something that probably isn't definitively there. But what's more MDs (and PhDs driven by reaction formation and projection that maybe after 40 years of compulsive perseveration has even normalized an obsession into OCPD) KNOWING a patient population have developmental delays have a DUTY not to co-abuse and groom us with deceptive obfuscations that only make us likelier to become successor perpetrators. Like women who childishly care too much about securing their own futures to enter the dating/marriage pool as potential mates who don’t want children. Doesn’t get much less accountable than willingness to stick one’s unborn kids with iASD of unknown severity, and of course being unwanted those kids end up autistic. Then, what, these mothers just pretend they can’t imagine how something like that happens? Yes, that's exactly what they do…because Medicine, by lying to us about the etiology of autism, uses our developmental disability against us.
So Simon probably would like to find the RESIDUAL epigenetic signature of an environmentally-induced disability in order to manufacture credit for "discovering" a marker or pattern he can misrepresent as PREDICTIVE of autism. Notice he's not proposing PeT or fMRI-imaging newborns or four-week-olds to look for signs of autism or even to use as a baseline. BECAUSE HE KNOWS AUTISM IS NOT CONGENITAL.
I thought only narcissistic and sociopathic mothers induced autism but how about one more surprise? Anyone know how to make a so-called DARK EMPATH? One part autistic cognitive empathy deficit + one part autistic affeective empathy surplus + unwanted motherhood = DARK EMPATH. The Harry Harlow monkey mothers who killed their unwanted babies after having been unmothered themselves. Just is what it is. We can grow up and face this harsh reality about the real world or we can continue to let Simon and his ilk exploit our naivete. Up to each of us individually whether adversity reveals weak character or builds strong. Simon needed a moral enema back when that still might have done him some good.
06:07 she thinks "it is having an impact". LMFAO welll of course it's easy to think what serves you about what doesn't affect you, now isn't it? Lady, stop. You're embarrassing yourself. Citing your own example, we'd be no worse off if you had been discouraged from doing this bogus research. Got it?

autism diagnosis is being handed out like smarties in the same way antibiotics are. Its so pathetic seeing these snowflakes trying to pretend they are special and delicate because they are autistic so they need special treatment. Its also sad to see people with complex mental health needs being told they are autistic rather than being given proper therapy and its really annoying when terrible parenting isnt called out, instead the child has autism. It is such an insult to the genuine autistics who are really struggling. Loose loose all round.

The idea of a nebulous autistic community in a fight with science is ludicrous and just listening the loud voices of very few people.
I'm autistic, and I don't like the idea that autism is not a disorder — my entire life has been affected by poor executive function, and the vast majority of autistic people do not go onto become researchers etc. If we remove the word 'disorder' and recategorise it as a personality type, then autistic people will miss out on the already scarce support.
I present well, I don't 'look autistic' (whatever that means) and I pass unnoticed, but if someone searched out a cure for autism, I would support it — it's not just a social issue; society cannot be blamed for poor GI function, toe-walking, sensory sensitivity, hyperfocus or any of the countless comorbidities that autistic people almost always have.

I watched the entire video and still can't figure out what the community is unhappy about. I have epilepsy. I don't really tell people around me because of potential stigma or prejudice. But I would love to be part of a study! Diseases are complex, and all sorts of efforts have to be made to under a disease from different angles. Of course, not all angles can't be explored in any one study. But science research is a slow process.

Autism is certainly a horrible disability. I'm diagnosed and so are my two children. It's such a spectrum though and has too broad a label. Autistics on social media who campaign that 'Autism is a superpower' need to remember that some people with it need constant care and can't speak or communicate at all, self-harm every day and live miserable lives full of severe limitations. Please don't take research away from helping people who suffer so badly.

Autistic person married to an autistic person, with an autistic child here: Less about biology, more about properly educating the public about the reality that is autism, how all people with autism are unique in how it is for them, and definitely more research and funding for services to support ALL of us. Just from a quick initial opinion after watching this I do feel like it is worrisome that they want DNA, and I would worry that tests would screen for Autism in unborn babies. I don't know enough about this though really to comment on why they would need or not need it? what I do know is the world needs more services, scholarships for helping people with autism get therapy if they choose to do so and education for Neurotypicals especially. My mother still doesn't know I'm autistic, but I did try to tell her about my child getting the diagnosis and she said, "No I've been around autistic people and they are not as bad as them." I nearly exploded I was so angry. Then she went into a long ableist description of people who had severe behavioural problems. I find a lot of people misunderstanding what it means to be autistic, for instance, "You are really caring though, you are also really empathic." I try to politely explain that people with autism can have empathy. It's stuff like this all the time, we need more understanding and also a willingness for others to listen to our experience, so I hope autism research can help with this. I also hope the money flowing around for studying autism can help get more formal diagnosis for the under represented people who are autistic but don't fit the stereotype of "rain man dude".

3:44 Autism is a disorder. It is not a lifestyle or a choice. High functioning autistic people can be "proud autists" all they want. But what about the low functioning autistics who will never function on their own in society? If anyone starts trying to compare Autism with homosexuality and saying it is a natural way of living, they are delusional. It is a disorder, it needs a cure.
I know several autistic kids, but they do not know me. They do not even recognize their own parents. They do not speak or make any effort to feed themselves or care for themselves. If left alone, they would die of dehydration within a week. That is not a lifestyle or a choice or a way of living. It is a genetic defect that requires research to find a cure.
