With Sunak being 2 Prime Ministers removed from a mandate from the public, many are calling for a general election in the UK. So how could this come about? Is Sunak likely to call one himself? Could Parliament trigger one? Or will the new King intervene?

What law is it that mandates an election must be held within a 5 year window? Why can't a government (with a large enough majority in both the commons or the Lords) Revoke any such law or change it to, let's say every 20 years? Similarly why can't a government raise the voting age to 65?

    People of England
Do the right thing and do not vote for any Tory under the local elections
Why they have failed cheated the population of the uk
    And do nothing for people
For over a decade they have ignored the bigger issues
    And need removed
General election must be called that’s what the population want

If there's an early election in 2023: The Conservatives will surely lose.
If the election takes place in 2024 as mandated: The Conservatives will surely win.

As an outsider, I cannot tell if labour is utterly pissed because they could very easily have a majority government. Or they're just sitting back either to watch the conservatives implode or because they want to learn how not to govern from the conservatives until 2024

6 years is too long for a General election cycle. Should be maximum 4 years. In Australia it's 3 years.

People should vote for the party, who can deliver for the country and the party select the party leader, who becomes the PM, the mandate would be manifesto that party chose, remember this is Parliamentary system not a Presidential system.

it’s ridiculous that they can change prime ministers whenever the party feels like it and we, the people that elect these politicians, do not get a say. We need a presidential system in this country and a general election!

  22. @iamseamonkey6688

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

the UK needs shorter terms. currently the UK only holds an election every 5 years, which is a long time and should be dropped to either 4 or 3 years. Also the UK's election system is very flawed. it needs to implement preferrential voting (which almost happened in 2011) and replace it's tiny single member constituancies with slightly larger multi-member constituancies these things together will make the UK parliament much more representative of the people and thus make it a stronger democracy

  26. @kennethferland5579

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

UK needs a way for the population to initiate an election when the current government is so clearly governing AGAINST the will of the people. 5 years is WAY too long of a time period for a legislative body to go without elections. And frankly I don't see anything wrong with the King calling an election in this situation, he's letting the people choose the government, not choosing it for them.

Why should the king intervene in the democratic process? The English public voted for the Tories 4 times and for brexit they haven't learned their lesson yet, when they are ready to they will vote them out.

  33. @johnbell9069

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

I'm just surprised that bojo the poison clown didn't try to call a GE as the ultimate act of spite against those people who were forcing him to resign! Maybe he just didn't know about it and nobody was going to tell him!

  34. @Sergiblacklist

    Come on Charlie 😂

  35. @user-ht1vg5we2p

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

perhaps if Sunak also turns out unpopular, and if the cries for an election become louder and louder, enough Tory backbenchers could vote no confidence in him, to take a principled stance and thus their only chance of retaining ther seat, since it might be worse for them if they support an upopular government. If they remain loyal, they are just staying on the sinking ship and allowing the general unpopularity of the party to affect them personally

  36. @FluffyAdmiral

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

Do you think that if people would make a petition of calling for a vote of no confidence in the government and large number of population would sign it, would that be a good trigger for the government to realise that they got no mandate and call the GE anyway?

  37. @christophermcguire7888

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

Not, in a pigs eye, the Tories/Nazis are so far, behind, you thought 97 was bad, there'd be, no opposition to be leader of. Bloody, King Charles, never, forget it.

  38. @AT-bf8ol

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

People are wanting a general election, yet they'll just vote for Tories again.

  39. @StevenSmith-mk5fg

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

It's in the Tories best interests to put the election off for a long as possible in the hope this recent shambles get's forgotten (a lot can happen in a year or two). The problem is that Rishi seems to be changing policies. What the UK now essentially has is an unelected oligarch as PM changing policies without a mandate. It will be interesting to see how long this can go on for

    PROTEST!!!

  45. @DanielleTinkov

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

Realistically the King can call an election only if things are really bad and there's a deep political crisis. If the Tories continue to burn through unpopular PMs and the economy stays in the gutter, it's not unlikely that at some point the monarch will intervene by first privately telling the PM that they need to call an election and if they refuse do it themselves. This, however, will require enormous disapproval for the ruling party (even beyond what it is now) and huge popular support for a new general election. It will also be unprecedented, but everything these days is.

  46. @9SMTM6

    December 27, 2023 at 3:08 pm

It is funny how everybody just accepts that politicians, people who are elected to represent the will of the people, are entirely unwilling of accepting the people's will and stepping back when they're unwanted and have no real perspective.

These UK politicians (and unfortunately most politicians these days, but the UK and US ones are the clear leaders these days) have no integrity AT ALL.
