Doom-mongering IMF forecast for UK economy labelled ‘instinctively anti-Brexit Britain’

Published

on

Liam Halligan has labelled the IMF’s forecast for the UK’s economy ‘instinctively anti-Brexit Britain’.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) upgraded its forecast for the UK economy this year, saying it expects it to be the worst performing economy in the G7.

It forecasts UK output to contract by 0.3 per cent this year before rebounding to grow by 1 per cent next year.

It makes the UK one of only two countries whose economy is predicted to decline, with Germany’s economy expected to contract by 0.1 per cent.

GB News’ Economics and Business Editor, Liam Halligan, said the prediction was “instinctively anti-Brexit Britain” and “months out of date”.

“The UK is, according to the IMF, the slowest growing of all the major economies in the world. There the IMF were saying our gross domestic product would shrink by 0.6 per cent this year, but now we’re only going to shrink by 0.3 per cent.

“So we are actually the most improved in terms of their previous forecast and their current forecast.

“They’ve upgraded us more than any other economy, but they’re still saying that the economy will contract and the UK will go into recession.”

He continued: “Of course, the Office for Budget Responsibility’s been saying that for months, the Bank of England’s been saying that for months.

“What I would say about these IMF forecasts is I don’t only think that they’re kind of instinctively anti-Brexit Britain, I really think they are, but I’d also say that they’re weeks out of date.

“There are so many layers of bureaucracy at the IMF, I used to actually work at the IMF in another life and it’s so political. This forecasting has to go through so many committee hands that these numbers are at. At least weeks out of date. Probably months.”

More non major investment into the UK from Sir Jim Radcliffes Ineos who will, build the all electric landrover in France NOT the UK. That means that all the new Landrovers built overseas . Sir Jim was a prominent leave supporter if my memory serves me right. Thanks for the support.

Brexit itself is the thing ‘instinctively anti-Britain’. We don't need IMF to point out the obvious of the state we are in. Right next door to UK, Ireland is a low tax and booming economy – and very pro-EU and embedded in it. Here in UK – now out of EU – we are just about limping along – and everyone knows it.Everyone except GB News and brexit supporters who can never of course admit they were ever wrong. But they were and are.

What’s the best performing region in the UK?
NI, as we got the softest of Brexits (despite voting against it)
Also Irelands per capita GDP is x 7 that if the UK.
    Lap it up!

The IMF is just another Left wing institution hell bent on destroying the UK purely because we voted Leave. But in the long run, we’ll be alright. You can’t undo 40+ years of EU membership in the space of a few years, especially when our own civil service thwarts the elected government’s attempts at every turn. The Left in every country is basically an anti-democratic ideology

IMF is nothing more than an outreach program by the US Fed Res, creating it's own subjectification of who is doing the right or wrong thing in the Globalists viewpoints, and "rewarded" or penalised for it. Nothing more.

It’s what’s called trying to create a self fulfilling prophecy – the more they talk is fine the less confidence people ha d which then fulfils the IMF pessimism forecast. Considering what this country has gone through the last 6 years I think the UK economy has proved remarkably resilient!

Liz Truss crippled the UK economy but the real baddies are the IMF because there's a dastardly French guy there. And saboteurs within the Central Bank! Even after brexit, the Brexit persecution complex is getting worse.

The UK Gov and the USA Gov want the UK back in the eu regardless what the people voted for Vote Reform if you really want Brexit to happen and we can break free this bankers dictatorship

  21. @michaeltagg492

    December 25, 2023 at 2:30 am

Of course it is anti Brexit because there is no rational economic argument for it. The IMF had a pessimistic view of the world economy and ours improved but so has everyone else. As for Truss she is completely deluded blaming those well known WOKE Leftie blob City of London traders.

  22. @chrislaurenceleo

    December 25, 2023 at 2:30 am

I think the IMF always defer to the more pessimistic outcomes for all countries so when comparing forcasts for the UK against other countries they tend to be correct.

I'd be a bit wary of anyone predicting stuff if they've predicted about Russia. Who haven't even published economic data since March 2022. Incidentally, a lot of the IMF economists are Russian.

The economy is already collapsing. Proof is in the last few weeks. Bank loans have decreased by $104 billion in a 2 week period. And bank loan tightening will certainly continue as long as banks are suffering a liquidity crisis especially with the trend of increased rate of loan defaults. During the next 12 months at $52 billion per week, bank loans will drop by $2.7 trillion. This will cut 12% off the GDP ($2,7 trillion/$23 trillion).
Yellen … just come out and say it … you intend to create a severe recession in order to ruin the market for Russian oil & gas exports.

Thank God , we are out of EU, everything has to go through EU GOV which is not democratic, all treaties and agreements we never voted for. EU let millions of invaders in, welcome. Yes, remember Merkel, come in! Much better on our own, but must get rid of Zionists: MAY, BLAIR, BROWN, MILIBAND and JOHN MAJOR, behind the scene anti- Brexit. VOTE REFORM PARTY. LIBLABCON destroyed UK. DIVERSITY, WEF NWO and GREEN never voted for, looks totally treacherous to me. Watch as Will Kensington expresses concern about the state of the UK, arguing that Downing Street is no longer a place of power but has instead become Britain’s most expensive Airbnb.

This comes as Andy Burnham is set to become the UK’s seventh Prime Minister in a decade, with seemingly no one challenging the “King of the North” for the country’s top job.
