Are war crimes being committed by Russia in Ukraine? – BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of war crimes, following an attack in the country’s second largest city, Kharkiv.

Russian missiles and rockets have hit the cultural heart of the city, where an opera house, concert hall and government offices were struck in Freedom Square.

Russia has previously denied targeting residential areas, but the International Criminal Court – which examines war crimes – is looking to open an investigation.

Let's just say war and war crimes aren't the same.
War is not anything new. terrible yes but not uncommon. (Look at USA invasion and meddling)
War crimes however are illegal even amid war time.
Here we see ukraine AND russia commit some of their own.

While people concentrate on Russian war crimes we need to also make sure Ukraine doesn't commit war crimes. Both sides need to be held accountable for any and all war crimes committed.

Do you even know why the war started then? in 2014, more than 300 Russian people happened in Ukraine, they were burned in Odessa, Donetsk and Lugansk, they did not want to be part of Ukraine and therefore there were rallies, then because of this, the Ukrainian Armed Forces began to shoot ordinary civilians in Donbass for not wanting to be part of Ukraine. Do you know that monuments to the heroes of the Second World War are being demolished in Ukraine? the fact that in Ukraine there is complete hatred for people who speak Russian? the fact that Mariupol was destroyed because all Ukrainians hid in their yards and fired from there? NATO, by sending its equipment to Ukraine, only itself is at war with Russia and hides behind Ukraine. Remember how Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Syria, Libya, Iraq were bombed. Why then do you not support those people who were killed by NATO?

I live in Moscow and I regularly buy supplies with my relatives and send them to Ukraine, our people understand what is happening there and we are against what the government of Ukraine is doing there, namely, it arranges the genocide of all Russians.

I don't like war, but I think If America and NATO had supported Ukraine as a connector between them and Russia, there would be no war. But what a pity that they (America and NATO) have meaned to garrotte and fight against Russia for the last Ukrainia. They always say about DEMOCRACY and PEACE! see what they did in Iraq, Syria, Lybia, the way they have been treating Cuba for over 50 years. All the thing they are doing is not for Ukrainia but for them and to make Russia less powerful

Rights Group Says Ukraine Torture or Killing of Russian POWs Would Be Clear ‘War Crime’

"All the information in the videos that suggests abuse, and maybe worse, of POWs needs to be subject to an effective investigation."

    by Brett Wilkins 1.4.2022

A leading international human rights group said Thursday that if genuine, unverified videos showing Ukrainian troops shooting Russian prisoners of war would depict war crimes, while calling on Ukraine to “ensure an effective investigation” into the alleged abuse.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a statement that “if confirmed, the beating and shooting of captured combatants in their legs would constitute a war crime, and Ukraine needs to demonstrate that it is able and willing to prevent and punish serious violations of international humanitarian law.”

HRW senior legal adviser Aisling Reidy said that “all the information in the videos that suggests abuse, and maybe worse, of POWs needs to be subject to an effective investigation. It should be possible to verify if abuse took place, and from there to hold those responsible to account.”

The incident appears to have occurred at a dairy farm in a village near Kharkiv two days after Ukrainian forces retook the area. The videos were posted on social media late last month. On March 28, Ukrainian journalist Yuri Butusov published video recorded at the same dairy farm showing the charred remains of what appeared to be people in Russian military uniforms. It is not known if they are the same soldiers who appeared in the previous videos.

Ukrainian officials said the videos would be investigated. Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) published a statement suggesting the videos could be “directly managed by Russian special services,” and that prisoners of war taken by Ukrainian forces “are treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention.”

Russian “occupiers spread fakes to divert attention from their atrocities,” SSU said. “Russian fakes are similar to Russian TV series: cheap, vulgar, predictable, and with poor acting.”

However, experts consulted by HRW said the videos showing the men being shot were consistent with wounds caused by gunshots.

Olexiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said March 27 on Telegram that he “would like to remind all our military, civilian, and defense forces once again that the abuse of prisoners is a war crime that has no amnesty under military law and has no statute of limitations.”

Since invading Ukraine in late February, Russian forces have been accused of war crimes including bombing residential areas with cluster munitions; attacking humanitarian corridors and civilian infrastructure including homes, medical facilities, schools, and shelters; shooting unarmed civilians; torture; sex crimes; and kidnapping and forcibly deporting civilians.

International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim A. A. Khan announced four days into the invasion that he was launching a probe of “alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity” committed in Ukraine.

I'm American, Russia accuses Ukraine – Ukraine accuses Russia. Geneva is a double edged sword, but it's blunt. Hypocrisy -.should not exist the international law is clear – tit for tat is not allowed. But I see nowhere a character respected by all who would could stand up and make clear it's time to talk. Neither of you are getting anywhere other than filling graves. Reality, it will have to o to a table, that's inevitable, the west are exploiting as mush as the east NOW. Putin begun it but Ukraine and the West can win it at a table. Ordinary people are scared, you represent them not the armament industry. Radical dynamism protracts genius outcomes – we used to have them. I planned the Bin Laden Raid for a better more peaceful world, where we all can work together – why has freedom become a gift instead of a right? Ukraine has cards it's failing to play behind a wall of hate. Putin and his kind only see the game they call win. I thought better of ordinary Russians….. Every time we have such a conflict, the group I respect shrinks.in stature….. Failing to transpose this before it elevated into war….. As I said I'm still American and still proud

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
